Ok, I'm going to ask. I've read and re-read the rules and all the rules questions here and can't find anything about leaders dying. There's a card that sends Brennus off the board at least for a while and there's the petulant Greek leaders who go home if they don't get paid but otherwise leaders are rather unrealistically long-lived. I feel like I'm missing something. Please point it out someone?

You are correct. The leader counters represent both the named leader as well as their successors according the the designer; otherwise there'd be a lot more leader counters for essentially the same effect.
