Dominant Species - good for 4-6 players. Area control game. Every round, players take turns putting their markers on 1 of 14 different actions. Once the planning phase is done, the actions get executed left to right, top to bottom. Game ends when the next ice age arrives (card near the bottom of the domination deck).

Edit: Yes, this is very militaristic. It just happens that your soldiers are animals.

Allow 3-4 hours to play.

Eclipse is not anything even remotely like Risk.

Something deeper than Risk but Risk-like? Guess it depends on what elements you like about Risk

Though it is out of print, don't forget Supremacy.

Or, perhaps the true successor to Risk... Axis & Allies.

Dominant Species looks interesting..I just grabbed Evolution at Origins..can Axis and Allies be played free for all or is it 3v2?

I like the area control, small skirmishes, alliances, dice rolling to name a few mechanics..

Axis & Allies is always two different sides (that is the hazard of simulating a historical war). Supremacy is a free-for-all (more "modern" representation of war).

Imperial 2030 should do the trick.

Check out these options:
Shogun (best with 4-5) or Wallenstein (best with 5) - still a Risk-like dudes on a map game but with cubes. Simultaneous action programming and the great cube tower.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) - made for 6 although IMO best with 5 as base game, or with 4 with the awesome A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) – A Feast for Crows expansion. Simultaneous action programming again, limited numbers of units, pretty thematic, but all in all a pretty similar feel to Risk.

A sister game to A&A is Samarai Swords, aka Ikusa, which is a free for all and risk-like.

A good step up from risk in terms of mechanics, being more interesting and having better game flow is Spheres of Influence: Struggle for Global Supremacy

This game is still easy to learn and suitable for mass market, there is also a KS expansion coming out that adds lots of extra elements.

Dungeons & Dragons: Conquest of Nerath Board Game is very much like Risk, but with different unit types and some extra options, like going on quests...

"Deeper than Risk" is a very broad category and you should give a few more details so the community can provide better recommendations. Play length? Particular mechanics? Negotiation? Etc.

Having said that, take a look at Senji. It plays 4 - 6 well, and the forums of the game often say that it is the next step after Risk. Good luck!

Blast from the past! I loved this AH game when I was a kid - every time someone wanted to play Risk, I always responded that WQ was so much better.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars, where you will be forced to drift aimlessly farther into the vast, empty abyss of space until a lack of food, water and oxygen causes you to succumb to Death's cold embrace.
