The solitaire game requires the player to play two different colors, and this allows some cooperative strategies that would be difficult to achieve in a competitive multiplayer game. Why not, in a two player game, simply have each player control two colors? This would enable cooperative strategies like joint refugia, gene swapping, planned endosymbiosis, beneficial parasitism, etc, while also preserving a tightly competitive game. Did any playtesters try this?

It's almost like a "team" game. Cooperative play, but only for half the folks.

I don't know of anyone that tried it, but I don't see why not.
