Is this possible? For the characters? Like if you activate it will it mess up your mansion with pieces you dont have or can you turn on just characters if you want?

If so how?

You can't turn on individual aspects of a expansion or base set. So if you want to have the investigators from the conversion kit appear in the app, you may get tiles that you don't have.

However, the app doesn't track damage or special abilities so there is nothing wrong with using investigators from the conversion kit without turning on the corresponding gamebox. Just select other investigators for the app and remember who they correspond with, as some mythos effects will just effect a single, specific investigator by name.

However it is possible to play the game with the characters that you want. A few different ways actually depending on how ambitious you feel, or how long you are willing to wait.

1) (Most work) Enable the 1st edition components in the app, and use the characters you want, but whenever 1st edition monsters come up, use the conversion kit monster tokens in place of figures, and then proxy in 1st edition map tiles by using some paper and a pen/pencil to quickly sketch the important bits as they come up.

2) (Most complex) Don't enable the 1st edition components, but use whichever investigator you want, but select a 2nd edition investigator in the app, and just keep track as to which character is actually yours (so that whenever the 2nd edition character is mentioned, you know it is actually referring to the 1st edition character you are using).

3) (Most time consuming/expensive) Wait until the expansions come out in the fall which include all of the compatible 1st edition components, then purchase those.

If you cut some pieces of paper to the proper size before hand, the app will show you the tiles visually even though you don't have those chipboard tiles yet - and you can make a sketch on the paper to put down as a reminder of the pieces. For investigator figurines, use any substitute (such as the generic people disks or standees from another _____ Horror game). For monsters, just put the tokens down without having the minis. Want them to "pop", fold some cardstock into a little tent stand.

It won't be pretty, but there is no reason everyone can't play with the conversion components out of the box if they don't mind using stand-ins for the pretty bits. You basically don't have tiles (which the app shows you visually) and you don't have minis for the bits... that's all that is missing, and those will eventually be made and released.

Choose the character from the conversion kit. Pick a character of similar gender/miniature similarities, etc... in the app, take that card, slide it under the conversion kit character you're going to use so you can reference the name.

Eventually just buy the expansions if you feel like it.
