Border War - Turn 7

The Pakistan/China side rocked it last turn, earning another initiative turn for T7, but can they keep the pressure up?

Weather
It's the wet season, so the poor weather continues with "Overcast".

Initiative
Pakistan/China side got 21VP in turn 6, so they earn another initiative turn by 1VP (needed 20). Again, no UN roll due to Level 4 intervention by PRC and Russia.

Electronic Detect
Dice are hot, so Pakistan finds 3 Indian HQs and India finds 2 in return. However, the lack of missile rounds and poor weather will limit the utility of these finds.

1st SOF
Just two PRC teams left. Both attempt targeting missions on off map nuke sites. One succeeds. Both teams ok.

Air/Naval
Indians and Russians had a lot in the abort box last turn, so can only muster 9 units in the air superiority box. Pak/PRC side matches them.

Long Range - 3 engagements by PRC stealth units. Two Ad and one Abort result.

Standoff - Pak/PRC dice go cold, so India does a bit better with one each DA, A, and Ad result to just one Abort for the Paks.

Dogfight - Indians continue to smoke the dice rolls, getting two DA results. Paks/PRC come back with one DA.

Final result is Pak/PRC 5 squadrons to India/Russia 4, so we have our first contested air superiority status. AWACS stays at +4 to Pak/PRC.

2nd SOF
Indians have 3 teams left. One airfield raid, one interdiction raid, and one target mission. All fail, but the teams do survive.

1st Strike
PRC Cruise missile goes after Kashmir supply depot, getting a 1 result. Pakistan missile attack does the same, rolling a 0 and getting another 1 result on the depot. Indian missile attack on off map destroys an airbase. Russian cruise missile @ another base misses.

Both sides muster one big strike each, with the PRC going after the almost-isolated Indian defenders of Jammu:

Indians don't detect the strike, but overcast and poor dice result in a total miss. Russians try the same approach up in Kashmir with an attempted strike on one of the PRC airborne HQs:

Pakistan gets an early detect result, sending up an Su-30 to intercept. They DA the Russian fighter escort and abort the Su-24 squadron. The Tu-160 get through to the target, but misses. Painful outcome for the Russians.

Lots of HQ shots by both sides, but only one solid hit by the Indian XI Corps, which drops a "2" on a Pakistani brigade.

First Supply
I am straining the counter mix limit for OOS counters. May have to break out the NWK kit. One major change is the PRC 44th Airborne Division finally being able to use Airborne Supply from the airfield they seized in Kashmir. The Russians and Indians successfully get emergency supply through to two cutoff units in Jammu and Kashmir.

Initiative Movement/Combat
The Pakistan/Chinese pour on the gas, hoping to get some of the key cities/towns still holding out, such as Rajauri, Jammu, Srinagar, and Baramula (the later two in the Kashmir Valley). The dice don't quite cooperate though..

Their first attack succeeds against the exposed (and OOS) Indian 33rd armored division down near Amritsar. It gets caught up against a river and a solid 9 column attack gets a -/2R result that eliminates the valuable Indian armored unit for 3VP. So far, so good.

The second attack is a weak attack on Jammu, hoping for a great die roll. Indian SAMs abort the PRC air support and a 2 column attack ends up rolling an "8", leading to a painful 3/- result that eliminates two reduced Pakistani divisions as well as a brigade (8th and 9th infantry + 2nd armored brigade) for a whopping 8VP for the Indian side! Attack was probably not a good idea, but I thought this would be the Paks only chance at Jammu, and hoped for at least a step loss on the defenders.

The third big attack is up in the Jammu Highlands on the town of Rajauri (3709). Paks and Chinese do better here, finally eliminating the Indian 10th infantry division for 3VP and taking the town.

The most critical attack is on Srinagar, which the two Chinese airborne divisions have managed to surround, although without a ton of combat power:

Both sides throw in big time air support. The Russians get intercepted by Chinese stealth fighters again and get hammered, with the escort getting aborted and an Su-24 getting flipped. However, the Su-25s sneak through. The Indian SAMs nip the PRC Su30 but miss the JH7, so the final net air is -1. But, another "8" sinks the PRC attack, and then end up with a 1/- result.

A weak 4 column attack on Baramula (4409) is also tried, again hoping for good dice and some losses to the defenders. This time a 1 is rolled, but on a low column due to the city, so only a 1/1 result. A long shot attack on Bandipora (4610) on the other side of the valley doesn't go well, with another 8 popping up and the Pakistan attackers eating a 2/- result, losing a mountain brigade in the process.

Exploit Phase
Not much action here after the beating the Pakistanis and Chinese took in the initiative combats. One exception is a successful attack on the Jammu Highlands town of Sunderbani (3611) defended only by the Indian XVI corps HQ. The HQ gets flipped and retreats.

Reaction Movement/Combat
The (Indian) Empire strikes back...

First move is an airmobile operation with 50th Para brigade trying to sneak behind the Pakistani lines and take out the supply depot supporting Pakistan II and XXXI corps on the far left side of the front in hex 1614. The detect roll is blown, so the paras land right beside the supply dump. In the combat phase both sides throw in air, but the depot is taken out. Probably should have read my own article and guarded that thing...

The Indians also take back the just-taken town of Sunderbani in 3611, with the elite 6th mountain division leading the attack. They take out one Chinese airborne brigade in the process.

And finally, in Kashmir Russian and Indian troops break the siege of Srinagar with a joint attack, eliminating a Chinese airborne brigade from the 43rd division.

Overall, the Indians start to rollback the depleted Pakistani and Chinese attackers, who seem to have shot their bolt for the time being...

2nd Strike
Both sides are out of ammo. A lone PRC cruise missile attack misses the mark.

2nd Supply
Thanks to the Indian airmobile mission on their depot, two+ corps of the Pakistani Army go out of supply over on the left flank.

1st Basic Movement/Combat
On the OOS left flank, the two Pakistan corps reposition to try to hold a line until supplies are restored. Elsewhere they make marginal moves. Up in Kashmir, the Chinese decide to cut their losses and abandon the assault on "Fortress Srinagar" in favor of shifting to help try to isolate and take the city of Baramula (4409) in concert with Pakistan X corps elements, which would open up a supply line to the valley. It's a decent attack on the 8 column, but Indian air support and a bad die roll result in a 1/0 result, so the defenders continue to hold.

2nd Basic Movement/Combat
The Indians focus on consolidating gains from earlier, but do launch one critical attack to take back the nuke site / airfield hex in 1620 just north of Bathinda on the left flank. Massing the newly arrived XII corps, the Indians easily flip and retreat the defenders with a 12 column attack.

Isolation
Despite not taking the city, due to the high mountains on two sides the defenders of Baramula are isolated. But, the dice smile on the Indian and Russian defenders (a "0" and a "3") so they don't surrender.

Reorganization
Both sides get some location VP, with the Indians ahead with the recapture of a nuke site, an airfield, and a town in Pakistan outweighing the Pakistan taking of Rajauri in the Jammu Highlands.

Reinforcements
Only thing worth noting here is the lack of reinforcements. Both sides have what they are going to get in terms of combat units, with just a trickle of supply, missile, and replacement points from here out.

Victory
Pakistan/China 63VP + 6 = 69VP
India/Russia 50VP +18 = 68VP

The Indians, through retaking some key terrain and eliminating a lot of enemy units, claw back to within just 1 point of the invading Pakistan/China force.

You attacked on the '2' column! You're a braver man than me, especially given the poor combat rolls Pakistan seems to be getting.

All these risky attacks are certainly making for a dramatic narrative though.

Yeah, probably not the best idea, but on the 2 column you still have a decent chance at a step loss on the defender if you can get the mods working in your favor. Not the case with that one due to Indian air getting through.
