Hi,

I was recently on holiday and in the bar of the hotel on a table a short distance from us, a German family of 6 people were playing an intriguing looking game that i had never seen before. After watching them for a few moments, I was going to ask them what the game was when they had to leave quickly to get a taxi. I didn't see them again so never got to know more but i've since been fruitlessly searching the internet and cant find out what the game is. So I thought i'd post this in the hope of someone knowing the game. It looked like an old classic game (in a very nice wooden box) so it may be obvious to some but i had never seen it.

Basically, from what i could see, there was a wooden box, around 15cm squared that had holes in the top with what looked like numbers next to the holes. There appeared to be around 6 holes but may have been more (i was too far away to get a good view). Most of the holes were just 1cm deep into which small wooden dowels (around 5cm long) were placed, but at least one of the holes went all the way through and when a wooden dowel was placed into that hole, it went into the box and out of the game.

Each of the players rolled a dice and then did one of several things on their turn - they either placed a wooden dowel in one of the 1cm holes so it was left standing upright, they placed a dowel into the 'hole' so it disappeared into the box, or they took one of the dowels that was already standing upright. Unfortunately I was too far away to see how the dice roll corresponded to which one they did but at times there were several dowels standing upright and at others, there seemed to be none. I saw several rounds and it appeared that some people went out of the game and towards the end, only two people remained rolling the dice. It seemed to go very quickly and looked like quite a good quick family game

I wish i'd had the chance to ask what it was but figured i'd find it when i searched online but haven't had any luck...and its really bugging me!

From the limited amount of info above - does anyone know what this game might be please?

Thank you.
