It's a shame. I visited there in the late '80s (pre-Chavez) and it was a nice place.

Huh? Socialists control Venezuela. If you want to argue that it's sort of like populism just so you can make it about Trump then go right ahead. But You'd be wrong. Venezuelan politics don't seem to have a shred of populism in them as Chavez, his party and those who followed are all socialist.

It's clear why that nation is falling apart and it's certainly not because of any similarity to Trump or Sanders. Well, maybe Sanders but Sanders is a lightweight who has shown by his Hillary endorsement that all along he just wanted to be relevant and to get a new lake house.

The kind of socialism Bernie Sanders wants wouldn't lead to the situation in Venezuela.

That kind + a lot of oil gets you Norway, which is a very nice place, and IMO highly unlikely to fall apart even if oil stayed "cheap" forever (or if theirs ran out for that matter).

Saying a nation can't be socialist with a populist leader is like saying Utah can't be conservative with a populist leader. And that leader is the LDS church. Ask people if they want government interfering and they'll say hell no. Then look at the way the state's liquor business is run. And people here are happy because... well... alcohol. Populist sentiment.

Maybe we need to install restrictor plates on your front porch rocking chair.

From what I understand it's more "Hey look ! This is what happens when you rely on a single natural resource and you spend today the money you will earn tomorrow while thinking the price will never decrease."

Well, that and using the oil money to pay running costs instead of investing it into infrastructure and education so you generate different sorts of income.

Not sure about Sanders and Norway but yes, Norway is a good example of what can be done with oil money.

Yes. Frakking killed the economy in Venezuela, just like oil companies who didn't diversify into frakking are hurting. A single export country that relied on oil as the far and above single source of wealth would be hurting whether they were was Socialist or not. Especially because Venezuela's grade of oil is hard to refine, it makes it even less desirable and prohibitively expensive. Heck, even OPEC is losing profit hand over foot.

The people trying to demonize "Sanders Brand Socialism" with this monolithic example, that has so few commonalities, are painfully transparent in their attempts to use anything to discredit the growing Left sentiments in the U.S., they really need to smarten up their game as they sound like the shallow media who glom onto single issue memes to make sensationalist headlines.

I mean, capitalism has done wonders for a neoliberal plutocracy like Mexico. We should definitely put more people like their leaders (Clinton) in charge of our country. A big oil producing country like them should be rich by now.

Mexico has improved leaps and bounds in many areas except for the border due to the war on drugs. So, what's your point?

Venezuela has had free healthcare since 1999, hey how's that working out? The government plundered over 1 trillion dollars from the oil industry since Hugo Chavez took power. How about hedging against a downturn in the price of oil? A trillion dollars in a country with a population of 30 million that receives an average monthly income of $20 goes a long way.

Meanwhile look at Chile, since 1970 real wages have increased 216% while decreasing 17% in Venezuela.

Have you been to Mexico lately? I mean like a few hundred yards from a hotel pool? If you want the U.S. to be like that, then by all means, vote establishment.

The people risking their lives trying to come to the U.S. (over and over again) aren't escaping Fantasy Island.

So it was mismanagement and reliance on a single industry, not socialism, that caused the problem, good to know.

You might want to adjust your dates, since half that time Chile was ruled by a not-so-nice Dictator. Also, their economy is not tied to oil, but to copper. Hmmm.

EDIT: Upon educating myself more on Chile's current health, I couldn't help but notice that 64% of the population are on some type of welfare. They use something called the Social Protection Card. Sounds like Socialism to me. In fact in the areas of healthcare, pension and education they are getting more socialized all the time. Why? Because of income inequality.

Utah? Venezuela? LDS Church? I understand some people want to try and paint their own pictures on things they don't understand but Utah, despite being the center of a big church, nobody outside Utah or the LDS churches knows the name of it's leader/CEO. Same goes for these morons here in RSP who know who Chavez was but can't name the current leader without using Google.

Essentially this thread quickly turned into TDS* because that's the focus of RSP these days. Venezuela is a socialist nation and it's failing due to that and a history of corruption. Someone said "Norway", which is true, along with Saudi Arabia, etc. There are enough examples of nations surviving well despite relying on one major resource that one just has to look past the Trump Derangement and hatred of freedom and free markets to grasp what is is about a nation like Venezuela that is flawed enough that the government is considering forcing the general population to work the farms for no pay in order to "save the nation".

The idiotic idea that Trump would somehow create an America similar to current day Venezuela illustrates how totally devoid of intelligence the hard core cumbucket Lefties here in RSP really are. Even Hillary (the fucking epitome of Populism With a Vagina) couldn't destroy America.

You being a failed entrepreneur and current Uber free spirit (as well as a pretend conservative) I assume you have X5 the intelligence of the average RSP Libtard and understand that not even Utah (which has no oil, but plenty of salt) could be turned into Venezuela by Trump. As for your ageism bigotry, all I am is older than you. I am also faster than you, stronger than you and could probably out shoot, out BBQ and out game you. Try and not be a bigot and we'll get along fine.

*TDS = Trump Derangement Syndrome
