Dog days of summer--hot and humid...

Monday
1x - Bora Bora - mb

Wednesday
1x - Saint Petersburg

Friday - A2:42 Camping Trip
3x - Love Letter: Batman
1x - Guildhall - Fellowship cards

Saturday - A2:42 Camping Trip
4x - Bananagrams

I was glad my wife and I got some games in together during the week. With school starting soon I hope we get back to our early morning routine on days I work from home. Any time I get to game with girls is a real treat, now if I could only get them to the table more often and with some other games. Our annual camping trip is an anticipated highlight every summer, although turn out was down this year and we had some weather challenges we managed a few games--I'll take it.

Note: I posted my 2016 edition of my Top 50 games (see link below). Take a look and share your thoughts.

meeple Keep playing...

Not a bad week. Not great, but not bad

On Tuesday, GF and I played Race for the Galaxy. She got a nice military engine going, but my produce/consume engine was just a bit faster, so I managed to end the game before she started scoring massively

On Thursday, it was time to break out Agricola again. I played a relatively mean game, but still gave her too much slack. Ended up losing this game for the first time

And on Sunday, we had a small game day. Started out with two rounds of Codenames while waiting for the last person to arrive. Won both games, woo
After that, we played one game of Exploding Kittens with Exploding Kittens: NSFW Deck added in becaues we were with six. I really don't care for this game. I bought it because of the illustrations by The Oatmeal, but I don't like playing it. But one of the people in the group absolutely had to play it, so we did. Ah well.

Then on to the 'main course', which was our first play of Battlestar Galactica. Most people in the group enjoyed it, though there was one who found it boring until she became a Cylon. We didn't finish it due to time constraints, but it was okay for a first play. Having three Cylons (two normal and a sympathiser) is tough, though

WEDNESDAY:
Millennium Blades 1st!
-This game was really fascinating! There were aspects I didn't like, but overall, I had a really good time playing it. The timing element is really tough, especially for your first game, because you're learning all the cards and synergies, and you have a time limit to figure everything out. But the gameplay is relatively simple. If I had designed it, I definitely would've done things differently, but I enjoyed it.

Unpublished Prototype
-We played my prototype for my game, which currently has the very clever title, "Solar System" (guess what the game is about). Ha ha, anyway, I got some really valuable feedback, and I think it's coming along nicely.

Casino 1st!
-A friend of mine really wanted to teach me this. It was pretty fun. I like a good game with a regular 52 card deck, and this one was pretty good, I'd play again.

SATURDAY:
Keyflower
-This was the weirdest game of Keyflower I ever played. Resources were extremely tight, and I don't think a single transportation tile came up. Still a lot of fun, but the decisions were very hard.

Russian Railroads
-I'll start off by saying this is my favorite worker placement game. I, as always, had a blast with it. We had a new player, and he picked it up really quick, which is great, because for a lot of people it's a bit overwhelming at first.

Carson City: Big Box
-This was my second time playing. We tried out the gun tiles, instead of the dice, and it was interesting, but I definitely prefer the dice. It's more suspenseful and feel a bit more fair. But overall, I really like this game. It's just such a cool system for a worker placement game.

Finally got to play this...and was let down. It's only after one game, but the game really didn't seem to have any redeeming qualities to it. It does a little of a lot of things but didn't captivate me in any of them. Ill play some more, but the first game left a bland taste.

1 x Five Tribes

I didn't expect to like this game, but it ended up really impressing me. I'm looking forward to another play.

1 x Viticulture Essential Edition
Solo, campaign #2 on aggressive. Lost 18-20. Still really enjoy this game as a 1-2p game. I really want to play with higher player counts.

1 x The Oregon Trail Card Game
My wife loves this game...me, not so much. Incomplete rules, no real player I put and a system that if you survive long enough might reward you with showing you it's broken capabilities. For many here, just avoid the frustration.

This week, I played:
Carcassonne x2
Targi x2

I acquired both Targi and the two "essential" expansions to Carcassonne this week, and was able to get both to the table twice.

Both Traders & Builders and Inns & Cathedrals were extremely well received expansions. My wife continues to beat me at least 75% of the games we play of Carc, but the new tiles and mechanics are great. Only complaint, if you can call it that, is that I always forget to put out the Builder.

Targi got two plays, and the reception was... mixed. I can tell that there's a good amount of strategy to the game, but the gameplay doesn't really ramp up or down in intensity between the start of the game and the end, at least from the first couple plays, so the end of the game is somewhat anticlimactic. Maybe this will improve with plays, and as my wife and I get more accustomed to the rules, but I don't think either of us were as enamored with it as with Carcassonne or Catan (which are my wife's two favorite games so far), and I don't think we felt quite as engaged. Maybe the issue is, in her words, "It's just not very pretty..."
