I have not played the game yet but here is an idea for expansions.

It feels that maybe aftet many plays the captain will have been able to memorize how the circuts are connected at yhe engineers departement and can easy make moved to fix the sub. Maybe im wrong but here comes atleast my idea:

Make a few more smaller sheets that are only shows the brokedown circuts area. Everygame the engineer take one for random so the captain doesent now have all the circuts are connected. And each time the sub surface and get ready to dive he picks one new circuits layout for random. To keep thay fresh.

Is it a stupid idea?

(Written from phone so prob alot of misstakes)

It is pretty easy to memorize the circuits as you say. They are all 3 of one direction and then east. But in the frantic nature of the game, it is easy to forget this as well. A captain can try to keep this in mind but the topography, and need to chase/lose the other sub overrides that sometimes.

It wouldn't necessarily be a bad expansion but not sure if it is one that is needed.

On the paper it is easy to memorize circuits and use its to advantage, but it is when real-time playing comes. You can't make all those calculations before move. It's not simply three space in one direction. then east. There are islands in your way and you really want to not move in predictable way. And you can't even turn east when you were moving west! You could make full square at the start of the game (ex. NNNEEESSSWWW), charge many systems and heal all the damage, but after few more moves enemy operator will know excatly where you are and you don't event have many space to move! And the whole idea of self-healing circuits is to not surface. Usually it is better to focus on utilizing surfacing to full excend, healing all the damage and clearing future path so you really don't need to use circuits every 4th move.

Exactly. An opposing Captain who easily be able to predict your moves, which will surely end up badly for you.
