Essentially they make a deal with a distributor or retailer to get something at a better price based on how many people buy it. In a method similar to Kickstarter you commit to buying it and at the end of the time frame you are charged and then you just have to wait for the game to arrive. Shipping usually takes a couple days longer than usual because the games first go to Massdrop, then Massdrop sends it to you.

As for the Scythe bit, the game was up on Massdrop a couple weeks ago and the designer/publisher got up in arms about it because they made the deal without his knowledge. He didn't want such a recently released game on Massdrop because of how it may be perceived and so on. Thus creating the joke of being an "official" drop.

For anyone needing a comparison, it's priced at the following prices at the major online retailers:

$119.45 @ CSI
$118.35 @ MM (But GotG Expansion is OOS)
$116.85 @ CH

Massdrop has two other mismanaged board game drops in recent memory. One is Zombicide: Black Plague, where they overestimated their vendor's ability to deliver the game in high numbers and pushed the ship date from early August to "Sometime in October" in an obscure forum post (no email to drop buyers). The second was Ascension, where they had to shut off the drop early when they realized "the price was too low". They claim to be honoring the drop price for people who got in, but it will "take a while" to get things sorted out with the vendor.

I've been looking out for a good deal on the base game since non-gamer spouse is a huuuuge Marvel fan and I think I can get this to the table a lot.

...Yeah, I just caved on this one

3 days left....just an FYI as this seems to have had a few hits and might have people on the fence.
