And we are heading into day 4 of Wacht am Rhein (19th Dec 1944).

The weather gods still favour the Germans, with no mud turning the roads into slow quagmires, and the poor weather otherwise continues, grounding the Allied air force.

Here the situation at the start of the turn. With the morning sun slowly coming up on a gloomy miserable day in the Ardennes, the Allies hope to eventually slow down the German juggernaut which particularly in the north is running effortlessly through and over desperate Allied infantry formations...

The Allied are receiving some further badly needly formations in form of the 3rd Arm Div, and 84 Inf Div coming in from the north, even though the
basic replacements are at an absolute low point with just 2 AV steps and 4 non-AV steps making to the front. Heck, the Germans are receiving double that!

The Allies manage to steal a march on the Germans and get the first activation. So many fires to put out though - a tough choice, and great for a game.

The Allied HQ decided that the spectacular success of the SS Divisions in the north is the most dangerous hotspot as it is the closest route to the Meuse.

30ID is tasked to advance southwards to guard the area around Spa, but not to move forward any further (as per our chosen optional rule).

They manage one full activation, but no reactivation (which is a big shame, as now no prepared defence, which will make a BIG difference). And even a partial would have created a solid roadblock as far forward as Stavelot!
This will have to wait until tomorrow. Sadly, some confusion and coordination issues resulted as the 30ID had to move through units of the 1ID.

Nonetheless, the SS will have to work a little bit now for it...

The Centre will see a lot of action the Allied sages are predicting... Time for the 82AB to prove that they indeed are an elite formation.

They manage to move forward strongly (full activation), and then get a react for a PD establishment. Only little issue is that the assigned area for the division is waaaaay to large....

Most units will not benefit from the PD (as > 6 hexes from the HQ; and the HQ could move only very little, as those AB HQs only have 2 MPs!), but it should still slow things down a lot one hopes.
Both of those roads in the south and north needed covering urgently while the Allied await the arrival of further reinforcements over the coming 24-48 hrs.

edit: this is a slightly different pic from the original as Lynn found a number of errors of mine that mattered which needed correcting.

German Activation 2SSPz.

With the reports of American 30ID troops approaching Malmedy, Commander 2SSPz directs the attack to Malmedy. In the advance to Malmedy 99ID HQ, south of Waimes, must be driven away to restore KGP’s MSR.

2SSPz’s attack on Malmedy succeeds and the division continues the attack over the Warche against units of 2/117/30ID advancing toward Malmedy. 2SSPz has won the race to Malmedy.

In confused fighting 2SSPz is stopped on the road to Francorchamps and on the road to Stavelot. With 2SSPz closed up to Malmedy the division renews the drive toward Spa (2SSPz gets a second activation but only Partial SNAFU)

2SSPz clears the road up to Stavelot but the main effort is made to clear Francorchamps and advance toward Spa. Francorchamps falls and 30ID HQ has to retreat toward Spa.

The North is the hotspot, and the seemingly effortless success and advance of the SS divisions causes alarm in the Allied HQ!

1ID is tasked to eliminate those pesky VdH German paras, and stabilise the front.

The division manages to advance southwards a bit (PD SNAFU = partial), and contests now several of the crucial roads north, but a total of 5 barrages on the German paras and SS troops inflicts precisely 0 hits.

At least TF Davidson gives the SS recon troop Recke a little bit of a bloody nose as a few more tanks of both sides litter the countryside. Even exchanges should work in the Allied favour in the long run.

With each road held by more than 1 dug in battalion, the front should hold, and importantly, the track through the woods to the west of Sourbrodt is now contested.

Allied activation - 101AB

The paras of the 101AB in Bastogne sense that they have been lucky so far, and decide advance out a bit to get some more depth to their position. Their left flank protected by the blown bridge at Houffalize, the right far south of any German units, a cautious advance is made, with some prepared positions and defences just in case at the end.
I have underestimated before how far Lynn can get with just one good activation, nevermind a double full, so I am mindful how fast things can derail...

And all those tank divisions that by higher orders have to go west or southwest might, after all, decide that Bastogne IS their target...

EDIT: had to change my move slightly, and hence upload a different picture as I made a rules mistake that Lynn found (I keep moving my HQ when declaring PD - just can't get it into my head it seems....). PD is however far more important here that advancing a few hexes more.

German Activation 1SSPz

[NOTE: For everyone following this AAR. Henrik and I will be using the BCS Rules ver 1.1 from this point forward.]

1SSPz moves to clear the stubborn remnants of the Allied 99ID from its MSR. 1SSPz disperses or drives away 2 Bns from 99ID and 1 Bn from CCB/9. 99ID HQ filters north through fluid German lines and sets up operations north of 2ID HQ. (out of image to north)

1SSPz is now concentrated with KGP on Rollbahn E north of St. Vith.

Allied activation - CCR/9

With the 101st now in a reasonable covering position at Bastogne and the main German thrust seemingly further north, CCR/9 is taken off the duty to guard the road towards Bastogne and is sent further north to cover the tracks south of the dividing river. Sadly, I can't, and despite a double partial, I am one hex short to drive into the flank of Lehr to the degree that I would put its train into an illegal hex (adj. to my unit, so under EZOC). Shame, but the Germans will have to deal with me now one way or another, and these are units that don't drive westwards...
