I was born in 1952 but I have to admit that the image that comes to my mind for a kewpie doll is actually a subclass of the dolls.

Prizes, or something you threw a baseball at, to knock over and win a prize?

A friend of mine made me a "punk" rock.
Glued googly eyes onto a nice roundish stone, and a small safety pin onto its "cheek", then added a strip of long pink fur as a mohawk running down the top.

I still have it.

Kewpie dolls specificaly are really an American thing, so most Brits of any vintage wouldn't know one. You'd have to know US crime fiction or films to come across one (which is how I know).

Apparently huge in Japan, as well, if Ebay listings are to be any measure of truth.

Quite common here as fairground prizes up to the 80s, now mostly supplanted by cheap stuffed toys. But certainly still around last time I went to the Melbourne Show (Fair) roughly 5 years ago.

Which is a thought - the Show is in September...

Actually, those things are called kewpie trolls and are a variant of the kewpie doll that proliferated in the late 50's early 60's when I was in elementary school and was dying out when I was in Junior High. They were referred to as both trolls and kewpies.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
That's Johnny Sakko. His sidekick was just known as his flying robot. I think it was called Giant Robo in Japan.

Johnny was known as Daisaku Kusara in Japan, I think.

Enjoyed the way OP structured the options to answer his poll. It was revealing... Wonder if there are more 50+ people on the sight or if the under 50 crowd passed this question by.
