It takes a couple of minutes, but if you make a line between your homeworlds with 4, 3, and 2 space lanes with systems between them, you can make a perfect triangle that's exactly 18" on every side.

The game box is just barely over 18". You can just use that.

you can simply measure an 18" string that you cut out and put with the game and use it to measure starting distances.

Or you can use three 4 sector lanes and one 3 Sector lane as well
