(Hopefully the title hasn't confused anyone into thinking this is a question/rules thread: I'm just trying to include elements of the key bits of this month's game without spoilers!)

Onwards: to come!)

With our first loss in July, late July had been a weird experience of playing a game of Pandemic Legacy without touching the Legacy deck. I was glad to get back to it for early August. It introduced three changes: the addition of the “Self-sacrifice” action, a new search target (the Immunologist), and the destruction of an objective.

Farewell, eradicating diseases. It’s been a staple element of every game until now, and for the first time since February, it doesn’t count towards winning the game.

With the need to either search or quarantine Faded cities in order to win, and two of the opening three-filled cities being once again Faded, Spike the Soldier (with his Paramilitary Escort) was a given. And with him pretty much has to come Sam the Scientist, with their Rivalry having powered both our previous games. Nicole and I stuck to our usual alignment (she played Sam, I played Spike) and we took to the map.

Our July win bonus put a fifth starting Military Base on the map (Lagos), meaning we only needed to build a single structure in North America to earn one objective. We wanted to find the Immunologist to progress the story anyway, so that would be our goal. We just didn’t want to complete and use up the objective and then lose the game anyway again!

We began in Cairo, with Essen being our third three and our wanting to send Sam there to prevent outbreaks. Nicole began once again so she was safe to escape an unlucky draw which could have dumped Faded in Cairo, and to immediately remove the threat of Essen. I flew east to deal with the throngs in Hong Kong and Bangkok – both Faded, both infected in opening, and both threatening more Fading in Asia. They were temporarily safe after my moves.

The first Epidemic dumped three cubes in Santiago. The two cards drawn were then that and exactly the one remaining three from the initial spread: Istanbul. Typical. That took Istanbul to 2 – hey, another rioting target for searching! But also 2 Outbreaks in already. With the search target now on 10, we were going to have to move fast to find the Immunologist. But fortunately Hong Kong’s previous misfortune was our fortune now: I could search for that card and one other Red to grab 4 spaces and in the process allow Nicole to grab one Red with Rivalry and reach a cure!

Nicole spent her turns driving around the west side of the map, clearing out cubes as necessary, while I kept popping around East Europe as usual, cutting down the zombies as they appeared. For once I was glad that I was drawing a set of Black cards, and managed to sneak in two different search actions in the correct cities for 3 advances each – finding the Immunologist before the second Epidemic! We scratched off the card and…ooh.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
A checklist, and a dossier panel – for a sticker for Box 7! What on earth could be inside there? Can’t wait to find out…

One objective down, so we just needed two more cures and the final Military Base. Unlike the previous game, the cards were actually spreading themselves between and a blue cure was discovered by Nicole – allowing her to remove the build-up that had appeared in San Francisco and eradicate Blue! Old habits die hard, it seems.

Another Epidemic dumped three cubes in Lagos and immediately popped, taking us to a third outbreak – and then again in Chennai, painfully causing Jakarta to Fade as well. But a yellow cure wasn’t tough to find, and all that was left for me to fly to Washington and build a final Military Base. Another win!

A series of new rewards were available: some new character upgrades and a couple of new event stickers – including one that just left me agape as I looked at it, amusing Nicole as I failed to read it out and just read it. The nuclear option indeed. Additionally, a new character – the Virologist, who we found in July, had finally decided to offer her services. At first glance I’m not sure she’s worth it, but three months ago I thought we’d never use the Soldier, so we’ll see what comes up!

For our bonuses, we picked another upgrade to Blue – taking it to 3 levels of positive mutations, and one fewer card for a cure – and gave Sam the Hacker upgrade (+1 hand size) since we’ve been finding she has to discard cards too soon and prevent her from having the cards she wants for Rivalry trading. I’d have liked to make the Washington Military Base permanent and have an instant objective completed, but after the loss of an objective this month, we may no longer be able to rely on that soon – and if it is still there, it’s easy enough.

Onwards to September!

Edit: This has now been played and chronicled here.

Well, we probably won't be playing September until the weekend after that, so seems like you'll be keeping your lead for now! Did you win August first go?
