I am looking for images of RL birds to use for reference. Found a couple of real nice ones for the Blue Jay.

I can't find anything that looks right if I search for "Hook beak" Black bird or any other order or combinations of search terms.

Please help me?

Ooh, very nice blue jay. Would you mind sharing the others if you find them? My google-fu for views of the wings like this has been pretty weak.

I forget which one Wrunk is, but it's been my understanding that the two black birds are a rook and a crow/raven (IIRC Wrunk is the crow/raven...probably raven based on the beak). I was trying to find another bird in family corvidae that isn't just all black, so I wouldn't have to paint them virtually the same, but so far I've just come up with the pied crow and the hooded crow.

Try the Jackdaw and a few other corvid species as they have some interesting variations on the hues.

Jackdaw

And the House Crow for example.

I found this when looking at the crow family and did a search for ravens, iridescent raven. Doesn't that fit some of the illustrations in the books?

For my Wrunk, I went with the Bronzed Cowbird -- a nest invader similar to the Cuckoo Bird that boots other species eggs out to lay their own. They are one of the few birds to engage in "Mafia Behavior" where if a victim attempts to kick out or doesn't take care of the Cowbird's fledlings, it bursts in and wrecks havoc on the remaining offspring (and then, to drive the threat home, targets the same nest and lays another egg to be taken care of there).

Seems like the kinda jerk move Wrunk would pull!
