I am playing by the original rules, modified by saleremanca.

Should I add Loire to the map as a map variant to get a better balanced game?

Is the Loire addition better or worse with the euro rules or in a 3,4,5, or six player game?

This is an interesting question. We play with the map changes and the revised rules, but I've never tried the original rules with the map changes. I have a loose recollection from when I was researching this that the new rules are slightly better balanced, especially 4-6 players, but I haven't played both ways to know one way or the other.

We just played a 4 players game with "old" rules and "new" map. I'm not sure I'm playing enough (my previous game was like 2 years ago) to be really able to comment on the differences, but I didn't feel as if Loire was making a huge difference. I was Paris. Genoa crushed us pretty badly (~2500, Paris ~1660, Venise ~1650, Barcelona ~1500).

I had a somewhat good start (winning 3 provinces in a war on turn 2…) but then got almost no leaders (3 in the whole game, despite even with Urban Ascendency on turn 2…) I tried a no-Galleys game but never really could go in the Mediterranean (the turn where I planned to buy Seaworthy Vessels was hijacked by Holy Indulgences, and after that there was no free spot to go…)

So, I certainly did not feel like having one more province was overpowered with 4 players. But of course, 1 game is not enough to have a real opinion.

I don't feel this change has a huge impact on game balance (which is as it should be). My opinion is that this makes wine a very viable goal for the Paris player, which potentially increases wine-related rivalries between Genoa, Barcelona and Paris. On the other hand, the extra province relieves expansion pressure early in the game, which can delay conflicts between Paris and neighboring players for a bit.

Where can you get the Loire and other amendments to the map?
