It was just a sales line.

I was confused:
Prime Movers
NONE

Falling Stars
[Stone Age -2 #63]
[The Princes of Florence -2 #83]
[Splendor -2 #84]

Hot Lava Birth
NONE

Top Ten Trends
Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization +1 #
Twilight Struggle -1 #3

Top 5 Winning Movers
Star Wars: Rebellion
Power Grid
Scythe (fourth week!)
The Voyages of Marco Polo
Fields of Arle

New Highest Peaks
Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization #2
Star Wars: Rebellion #11
Scythe #19
Fields of Arle #54
Mombasa #81
Viticulture Essential Edition #82

For a review/explanation of the terms in this thread, check out:

War of the Ring (1st) hit #5. I predict similar things for SW: Rebellion. Scythe feels closer to Mage Knight in terms of performance, maybe a #8 peak unless it breaks through like Terra Mystica.

Have a good week.

No histrionics over TS dropping to #3?

Pete (perhaps is just not looking in the right place)

After the whole Pandemic: Legacy thing, I guess much fewer people 'mind' that it lost the #2 spot to Through the Ages. I know I rated them both 9.5, for one

I'm guessing there's more mutual respect between wargamers and heavy gamers as there is going to be a certain amount of overlap versus those groups and Pandemic fans.

Twilight Struggle: #1 for 264 Weeks
Puerto Rico: #1 for 212 Weeks
Agricola: #1 for 78 Weeks
Pandemic Legacy Season 1: #1 for 34 Weeks
Tigris & Euphrates: #2 for 92 Weeks
Through the Ages: #2 for 76 Weeks
Terra Mystica: #2 for 57 Weeks
Power Grid: #2 for 42 Weeks
Caylus: #2 for 32 Weeks
Through the Ages 2: #2 for 1 Week

This may have something to do with it.

I know the horse is already dead, but how is a game with an average rating of 8.92 over less than 4K votes considered a higher rank than a game with an average rating of 8.36 with nearly 24K votes? Does the volume of votes account for anything?

Yes, there is anti-shill technology at work. Every game is offset by a number of neutral ratings before the average is taken. Otherwise, a game with one '10' rating would become number 1.

https://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/BoardGameGeek_FAQ#toc6

EDIT: And, re-reading your question, I might not have given you the answer you were looking for. Since it's an average, the effect of those dummy votes will lessen over time, so once games get over a certain amount of votes, games are compared by a number closer to their average rating.

I do know about the anti-shill tech :)

My question is how any game with that tech still in play is allowed to take top spots over games that have been firmly averaged due to a high number of ratings. Just an outsider looking in thinking the math needs an overhaul..

Frankly I think games from the last 12-24 months need a separate rankings list (sort of the sidebar hotness), anything that is worthy of the top 100 will make it there once the anti-shill tech has left the equation.

who knows??!?! :D

I thought the average rating was ... an average whereas the geek rating was an average excluding the extreme values and needing a certain number of votes.

The easiest way to temper the hype in the top 100 wouldn't be to affect a raising coefficient ?
For example: ratings given the month of the release worth 80 % of their value in the determination of the geek rating ad each month the percentage is raised by 5 points.

The problem would be to implement a more accurate release date.
