What I would do is use the Real-Time side, and probably 8 to 10 turns in (make sure each team has used a special or two so they know how it works), make sure everyone has their roles down, then switch into Real-Time mode from there.
My group played for the first time last night. I taught the game and then we played 5 rounds turn by turn on the real time board. After the 5th round we had a Q/A and everyone was comfortable with their role. I gave the group a chance to start over but both teams opted to keep playing from the current board state. I don't know if I would want to play full turn by turn game with 8 players.
