I am about to pick up Rune Age for the first time, and couldn't find a good answer for if I should get Oath and Anvil at the same time.

From what I can see the expansion seems to add more diversity without adding unnecessary complexity.

What I am having trouble discerning is if this is a case of the base game being great on it's own and the expansion just a means of "fresshing it up" after playing it to death. Or, if this is one of those games that feels almost incomplete without the expansion.

It adds 50% to the player factions (from four to six) and a number of new variants. If this is the kind of game you normally enjoy and the price is right you might as well throw it into the order now and save shipping.

Yes, the game is scenario-based, and the expansion increases both the player factions and the available scenarios by 50%, as well as fleshing out the earlier factions. The game is certainly fun without it, but it really completes the picture.

Buy it now, but don't add the scenario cards to the scenarios just yet. The 2 extra cards for each of the base scenarios increase the difficulty level, so it's good to play without them at first. And then, after you have a handle on the scenarios, you can add the 2 extra cards to freshen those scenarios up.

Personally, I'd play with all 6 units for each faction right from the beginning.
