So finding BGG has been great.

It has allowed me to embrace a new hobby and like everything new I jump in with both feet.

I really enjoy all the information and the community is awesome.

Then one day I saw the subscribe button..thinking how great it would be to find out when new information was available.

I currently have over 660 subscriptions.

These are spread out over numerous categories..with ITEMS the most prolific.

Besides subscribing to forum posts I create/participate in, I tend to press SUBSCRIBE for:

Games I own
Games I want

I was wondering how other members of BGG use the SUBSCRIBE feature?

Most threads / geeklists / images / blog posts / other discussions in which I have posted.

Many games I'm interested in (usually already own & play them, occasionally games I might want to buy or play).

Some blogs.

Occasionally publishers or designers I'm interested in.

The Abstract Games subdomain forum.

Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

I'm happy to have found this thread before it was lost in my subscriptions. It will probably disappear again, so it will take some while for me to react again.

Awesome tip for fellow sufferers.

I use this almost exclusively.

Wish I could make it the default landing page when clicking on subscriptions.

You can create an RSS feed that covers all of the games that you own. I find that to be really handy.

I have close to 2000 subscriptions. But most of them are for out of date threads that no one posts in anymore.

I mostly use it for forum discussions and Geeklists I want to follow. I generally subscribe to games only when there are a lot of questions about rules flying around.

I can never remember to click subscribe. I just automatically subscribe to anything I post in.

EDIT: Except for users. I'm subscribed to a number of admins since they often post limited time contests and other events for which one might get some microbadges.

Maybe it's time for another geeklist of this type: Let's count our subscriptions

Funny how at the time I had a whooping 277 threads and 133 images. Also annoying how I used to unsubscribe to threads and not subscribe to all of my own content. Past me, are you stupid or something

It's been great to see I am not as crazy as I thought.

Funny thing is I was looking for HOW people use their subscriptions more that quantities but the Data Miner in me still loves the numbers.

I have one use for them which I hypothesize is unusual: I get notifications about new videos for games I'm subscribed to; I usually don't actually watch the videos, but I nonetheless subscribe to them. Why? Because sufficently often someone will post a comment correcting a rule error that the person in the video makes... and that is sometimes useful info for making me aware about a rule subtlety or misunderstanding of my own, or at least for making me aware about a possibly common rule confusion in case I later explain the game to others. (Similarly if someone posts a comment pointing out some strategy or tactical blunder or tip in response to something in the video.) Most of the time videos get no (or very few) comments, so these subscriptions don't take up much of my time or attention, but when one of them triggers, it's fairly often reasonably useful info!

To subscribe to a game, use the "subscribe" link on the game's page.

To receive notifications about new videos for games you're subscribed to, manage your subscription preferences https://boardgamegeek.com/subscriptions/prefs to say "Yes" to "Include in subscriptions (defaults)..." for "videos" for "items" (in the second column of that screen).

To subscribe to a video click the "subscribe" link on the video's page.

I have somewhere around 50 subscriptions.

My general rules of thumb are:

If I lose interest in the thread, usually because the topic has derailed and there's just too many posts to keep up with, I unsubscribe.

If the subscription becomes obsolete and I do not see a reason to keep it for reference purposes, I unsubscribe. This tends to happen with Kickstarter related forums, but also with convention specific forums and lists.

The subscription dies and there's no need to keep it for reference purposes, I unsubscribe.
