compared to the base game? Anything we can do to the base game for now while we wait for this to come out?

Based on the rulebook in the KS, the only real difference is that all mission that apply to another player just apply to the other player. I don't think it was anything more than that.

The base game is fairly decent on it's own for 2 player.

From the current version of the expansion rulebook:

Same rules as a normal game, except for missions that would normally target another player:
NPCs count as players for mission target purposes (just like solo play) with the exception of The Kiln. If playing without NPCs, the opposing player is always your mission target.
Lone Drifter Ability: In 2 player: give +2 movement in 2 player.

-----
So basically set the NPCs around the table like they're other players, I would suggest you determine the player order randomly, and then sit around the table in that order. Sometimes the two players will be next to each other, and sometimes across the table from one another.

After playing this way a time or two, you should post about how you feel about this variant.

The Kiln seem to be the only real addition. They help to keep the players centered around them to some degree at least thereby increasing interaction. No idea if this is enough for 2 players or not as I am no beta tester.

The kiln isn't going to do much to keep players sticking around, but since you need to return there to identify Relics or sell Ember, there are reasons to return there.

The Economy Board does a fair amount at every player count. Even in a 2 player game, the reduced availability of goods requires both players to butt heads a little more than the base game.
