Could a magic user use a combat spell (like Finnock's chef's bouquest) on a deftness test?

No, as they are only for combat, and not for other skils

Jack, where do you see that combat spells cannot be used for non combat tests?

I understand the very title "combat spell" suggests that they are for combat tests, but I can't see that BASE-E offers such restrictions, it just says only combat spells may be used in tests.

I think by a strict interpretation of the rules you're correct, though it does seem thematically odd for example for the mage to use an explosion spell to help with something like a swimming test.

That's very true, it's been a while since I played the scenario.

They are combat skills, you can't use fighting for a agility test too
