I believe the answer is 'no' but I just wanted to double check. Once you activate (flip face up) an asset can you then deactivate it (flip it face down) at a later stage to keep it safe?

Agreed. The section on p13 feels right thematically - once the asset is activated it is both useful AND vulnerable. It wouldn't feel right if the asset could disappear again by becoming deactivated.

There are some game effects that can deactivate assets though.
