Fleet Book 1 says you can use class-1 beam batteries as point defense against missiles and fighters during the point defense phase, if a beam battery is used for point defense it can't be fired again during the ship firing phase.

We've had a bit of trouble during the firing phase remembering which class-1 batteries have fired from which ships, since we do point defense for all ships first, then resolve all the missile/fighter attacks, then move onto ship shooting.

Are we doing this wrong?

I would say make sure you mark it down on your order sheet when you do it. That way when the time comes you can look and remember.

I would use the tiny, six-sided "seed" dice, commonly found in games like Pirates of the Spanish Main and Rocketmen: Axis of Evil to indicate on the data sheet the turrets used for PD.
