We've now played several 4+ player games with all expansion modules in play. The biggest complaint players have had is that the game suddenly ends too soon by the triggering of one of the three winning conditions: 4 objective tiles, 8 tiles in the Chronicles, a wizard arriving at the Dragonlord Tomb. It was so very easy for one player to focus on only one aspect of the game, and end the game prematurely for everyone, often in less than 1 hour (beyond the 1/2 hour used for setup and rules explanation). The scores tended to be far apart as some players hit point scoring harder at the beginning and others played with a long game mindset. We also noticed how rarely dragons were purchased, especially when players learned that it was advantageous to score fast without regard for the objective tiles before someone quickly triggered the end of the game.

In order to increase our enjoyment, we've implemented a variant that requires activating two of the three winning conditions in order to trigger the end of the game. This encourages every player to experience more than just one aspect of the game and tends to extend the game length a bit. It also allows time to purchase more dragons and contemplate the impact of end game scoring from objectives and quests.

Typically we've found that the second win condition is activated only a few turns after the first. However, our experience is that this does give a more satisfactory experience for all. The game end is no longer likely to creep up on everyone unexpectedly and brings the scores closer together. It gives a much tighter race at the end with more hope, anguish and suspense.

Please post your experiences if you give this variant a try.

This sounds like a great variant. I often hear this complaint about the game. So I like this idea very much.
