The answer might be found in this picture.

This is the 1000 sq. ft. dome on Mauna Loa scientists are using to simulate a manned Mars mission. Six of them were in isolation from the rest of the world for a year.

One article quoted a participant as saying they had a "mountain" of board games and that some games last for days.

Could the bookshelf in this picture be housing this "mountain"? Note that everyone's (not just fake astronauts') idea of a board game mountain is our mole hill.

Do I see Eclipse? Ticket to Ride? Mission Red Planet?

Axis & Allies Europe 1940 combined with Axis & Allies Pacific 1940. It will pass a lot of time.

I would bring Diplomacy. If everyone kills each other, there's more air for me!

I have a particular set of skills. They mostly involve polling.

Hmmm. I found a tape of one of the participants saying her crewmates were playing some game called "Galaxy" with "lots of board and pieces all over the floor." Galaxy Trucker, maybe? Or Roll for the Galaxy? Or something else entirely?

Priorities people! What games were you playing?!?

6 players? Has to be dune/rex for one.
Super motherload and the ares project for theme apropriateness.

ASL for dedicated 1v1 action and great replay and scenarios to explore.

Magic Realm because, duh.

A moderate pile of M:tG for customizable play action.

Space Alert for training/teambuilding.

The Resistance for paranoia inducing/team destroying.

How adorable that they consider that small shelf a "mountain of games".

Here's a picture of them unpacking their supplies:

The guy on the top right is the gamer. That's Ticket to Ride in his stack. And some other stuff I can't quite make out.

Is there a limit, in terms of weight or of volume?

For absolutely no reason in particular, I would bring:

Buck Rogers: Battle for the 25th Century Game
Mission: Red Planet
Martian Rails
Mars Attacks: The Dice Game
Solarquest
Planet Steam
Space 1889 Adversaries
Risk 2210 A.D.: Frontline Season 1
Concordia
DC Comics Deck-Building Game with all the promos.

Pete (isn't really sure how he came up with that list)

Maybe we can ask them what they took. I did some light searching here on the mission crew (Andrzej Stewart, Christiane Heinicke, Carmel Johnston, Tristan Bassingthwaighte, Cyprien Verseux, Sheyna Gifford) and found one on BGG:

Well this was just a simulation and they skipped simulating the trip there and back. But there would be a limit for a real mission and I'm sure this probably used a similar restriction.

I know that weight is a huge issue for launching missions. They'll have worked out a formula for how much fuel you need for every pound of cargo, and they'll want to keep it to the absolute minimum possible. It's terribly expensive to ship anything. Even with lighter items they're obviously limited on storage space.

I don't know how it works with crew, but they probably are allocated a certain amount of weight allowance for personal items and I'd imagine they can spend it however they want.

That being said, it seems like you'd want to avoid taking a ton of game boxes. I think I'd try to consolidate multiple games into a single box and maybe try to avoid duplication. So if I had one game with the same pieces as another game, only bring one set, and use them for both.

Must say that I am disappointed by his relative scarcity of Mars-themed games. Of course, he just played the world's biggest Mars-themed LARP, so maybe the rest would just pale in comparison...

Dream on. You know full well that if you were actually stuck in a dome on Mars with 5 other people, it would be the awesome copy of Cards Against Humanity that someone brought. "Dude! You've got to try it. It's hilarious!" Alas, in space no-one can hear you scream.

Twilight Imperium 3 - because now I have people stuck in a dome and they have to play with me, bwahaha!
ASL- it might take a year to learn the rules
Warhammer 40K - not technically a board game but I would have a year to paint my mini's.

Interesting. It looks like he was logging plays fairly regularly up through August of last year. I wonder if this is why he stopped?

It would be very interesting if they logged their plays, to see if they gravitate towards lighter, quicker games or heavier options.
