So reload costs an action in most cases. Free reload allows you to ignore this penalty.

To switch between melee weapons (say if you have three or more in your hands) also takes an action to switch.

Would it make sense to allow Free Reload to allow you to switch between weapons in this case?

Maybe as a quasi quick draw to pull a weapon from your backpack?

Does that break things too much?

Let's leave differentiation between the skills. Sometimes a skill will not be useful for someone. In this case, it could be useful if he switched to crossbows.

Modern Zombicide has 'webbing' which allows you to pull out anything g you have for free. Perhaps there might be a medieval equivalent?

For everyone, there is the armor slot, which may instead contain a specific weapon, which basically means 3 in hand.

Strapping a weapon/spell to your body allows you to choose up to two carried weapons/spells in a combat action out of a pool of 3.

It's a core game mechanic and not tied to a specific melee skill, but it is most notably useful to give someone who's carrying e.g. a longbow and inferno to also be able to access a range 0 weapon without swapping around.

Of course each character card has a specific requirement for what weapon/spell can be carried in the body slot (instead of armour).
