Last I heard the rights were owned by Radiant Gaming (the successor to Valley Games). Given the mess surrounding this outfit I wouldn't hold your breath.

I'd imagine the rights reverted back to the designer. They did for container, another game that was published by VG

I'm not sure - I assume it depends on the terms of the transfer of rights. I guess we can keep our fingers crossed!

is that a prophecy, insider information, or elaborating on the "it needs to be" sentiment?

Haha. Of those three, it's rather elaborating. It's support of the sentiment and a bit of reasoning. And a strong wish.

I understand (?) that Valley Games went out of business. The upcoming elections are a nearly inevitable reason to do a re-print or rather a next edition, I think.

(Please excuse my choice of words if not precise. Politics are hard to write about in a foreign language.)

I don't know the game in detail. But as far as I understand, the original dates back to 1986 when Germany had gotten a fourth relevant party - the Greens (after the Conservatives, Social-Democrats and Liberals that had been dominating German politics and elections since the war). The most current edition (both 1997 and the newer Valley Games edition) reflect the addition of the Socialists - the successor of the former Eastern German Socialist Party. (Which is why that "blue" colour/party should rather be seen as purple or "deep-red".)

Now - as in many countries - a right-wing populist party has risen to a relevant size and power. During the last two terms the 5 party system forced the formerly undeniably biggest parties (Conservative and Social-Dem.) to form a "Grand Coalition". This was naturally a stable power, but also one that is not dynamic.

Now, the new right-wing "Alternative for Germany" might get 10-30% (who knows) - and certainly (hopefully) no other party will be willing to form a coalition with them.
Which means even the grand coalition might not be that strong or even able to form a majority. For the first time - if I'm not mistaken - a coalition of three parties might be needed to form a government. That again could mean that parties join for a coalition that have been outright opponents until now.

(You might be fully aware of this, so excuse my further elaboration.)

So the next elections will be important, thrilling and complex - more so than in the past 20 years - making up for a great new edition of Die Macher.

Furthermore, many processes are different from earlier, which is another reason to get a new edition. (Again, I do not know the rules and mechanisms well and might be mistaken.) Very similar to the US (and many other countries), the rise of the populists changes a lot. The media work different from 1986 or 1997. Parties use them in a different way. People tend only to believe what is their opinion in the first place.
I think a 2016 Trump vs. Clinton version of 1960: The Making of the President (which I haven't played either) had to be the subject of major changes because of that.
Now, Die Macher is a pure Euro. The fact that it is playable whithout knowing German tells me, it's abstract. Political topics could be coloured cubes. Maybe it could be a game of choosing fruits, animals or pirate loot. I don't know if the new media and voter behaviour is (and had to be) implemented at all. But this is surely where the most interesting challenges in the real process are situated.

Last, these thoughts don't let me go. It would be great to play this 6-party-version of Die Macher before autumn 2017. The elections will be held in September or October - probably end of September. So an Essen release would be just to late to be exciting. (Play this before the elections - what a thrill.)

I guess, the chance to see such an edition so soon is really small. I'm stunned that (if?) no publisher didn't think of that earlier.

What do you guys think? Who had to be approached to get to know about potential plans of a new edition? Or maybe even to inspire the publisher to do one! Hans im Glück? The Guys behind Valley Games? Karl-Heinz Schmiel (who seems to be hard to get in touch with)?

And if all of that is wishful thinking, would it be possible to make an own version with a sixth light-blue party? Would it be hard to adapt the game to today's topics (with the populist/liberal divide being the most crucial one)? I guess one would need a lot of knowledge about both politics and game design (balance etc.) - in any case more than I have.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I just want to throw in my voice clamoring for a reprint, that is, if any publishers are listening.

It is just impossible to find a decent version of the game for a reasonable price.

As an artist, I find the VG edition difficult to settle with.

EXCITING news. I've got some insider information now. I wrote to publishers who told me to contact the designer who just answered me very kindly that he indeed is negotiating with potential publishers. So a new edition might be on the horizon.

I'll not stalk the designer (now that I got his email)
I guess if he gets an agreement with a publisher, it's not getting published before Essen.

I'll admit that I'm surprised that no one has attempted to do a Kickstarter for a reprint of Die Macher. I'd be a day one backer if someone were to start that project.
