Hi all, I've been eyeing this game for a while as I love the IP, but I'd been holding off partly due to the Kickstarter mess and also because I am really not looking forward assembling the minis. With the release of the 2.0 rules it's looking like this may shape up to be a pretty solid game and I'm not concerned about the game being too complicated or whatnot. However, I have zero experience with assembling miniatures and the idea of the tedium and frustration of learning how to clean/trim/glue the minis, etc., is filling me with dread, especially when I read the posts about experienced miniatures gamers having difficulty with some of the pieces.

I understand that a huge chunk of the appeal of the game is having great looking miniatures, but what are the thoughts now on the game as solely a game (i.e. if all the figures were just chits or tokens, would it still be fun)? Also, have people found any decent substitute figures that don't require assembly (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Select-Colonial-Marines-Build...)? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Plenty of proxy figures out there. The AvP HorrorClix preds and aliens are a bit hard to find, but look decent.

Copplestone Catings has Hunter Aliens (all one piece): http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/list.php?cat=1&sub=35&p...

and Assault Troopers that would work: http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/list.php?cat=1&sub=32&p...

Hasslefree also have some troops that would work as Marines.

You could get Games Workshop Genestealers or other tyranids for the aliens. These will need some assemble but will be a lot easier (and if you look on Ebay you can probably find some assembled at a decent price).

As for how good the game is? In my opinion as long as you are not looking to use their figures, you may as well also look at alternate rules. The tiles that come with the game are repetitive and ugly, many better alternatives out there. The 'best' part of this game is the figures.

Welcome to the show.
You are right regarding the 2.0 rules, many hitches, have been addressed. And the game is shaping out to be really god. Even if you don't get all the expansions. They only add more flavor.
The 3 player aspect, is very nice and helps to keep the game flow balanced. I think its a good alternative to Space Hulk. And if you like the AVP universe its even more immersive.

I think the game without the models would still be viable. And if you are looking for nice pre-assembled pre-painted models, Heroclix is your answer.

Though they are out of print, but many online retailers still have them, and they are on eBay.

Is it worth it if you don't care about the miniatures?

NOPE!!!! The real saving grace of this game is the minis. They are incredibly detailed, and also fragile. If the prospect of assembling and protecting them from damage seems like a hassle... it is. This game is not marketed toward you, the boardgamer You are paying a premium price for a game you can essentially print and play 70% of for free!!!!! arrrh

The rules are available online for free from Prodos. You can build your own tiles for pennies, make better tokens than the game provides (seriously), and use whatever you want as minis. You would be missing the environment cards and the faction cards, but the game is playable without them (it's not as fun, but you can test drive it ). This way you can "play the game" without investing too heavily. If you really like it, you can look for a used copy on ebay and "upgrade".

Make no mistake, the cardboard/tokens used in this game aren't of great quality and are not worth $100+ dollars. Without the minis... I'd struggle to offer this up as comparable to a $30 boardgame.

With that said, if you bought the game, you may be able to sell your minis on ebay in a few auctions and recoup your investment. But you'd probably want to keep the stat cards.

Good luck either way!

Don't forget Mad Robot Miniatures also has Colonial Defense Force (Aliens Marines). I'm partial to the Hasslefree Miniatures which have Ripley, Newt, Pvt. Drake, and a good stand-in for Corporal Ferro; but I'd definitely consider Mad Robot Miniatures to round out the squad. They recently added female marines.

You can get these 'toy army men' types too:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015R6PUVK/ref=oh_aui_sear...

Not the best, but very cheap.
