Could this work as an optional way to choose the starting player?

Each player draws 2 cards, chooses 1 and reveals it simultaneously face up onto the floor. As per the rules, the player with the card closest to "A" alphabetically would be the 1st player. The card not chosen would be shuffled back into the deck.

Cheers!

What is the goal of this variant?

Is it to give players some control over whether they would prefer to go first(ish) or last(ish)? Or is it to have some control over which works remain in play and which go straight to the floor? Or something else I'm not thinking of?

I guess it depends on how you want to approach it. I thought it could give a tiny window of control over what work goes to the floor, but it could also give you that choice of going first or last. Sort of a small strategic starting play. Just an idea anyway. The game plays great as is!
