Optional Action you can add to the game called "Scouting"

This action allows you to Discard you entire hand of Locations cards to draw 3 new cards. This does take up an action however.

Credit for this variant goes to BBG user: Lenny Raaymakers

Thank you "Scouting" is the perfect title for that action!

Nice idea, I do think it should be limited to once per round (per player) though since otherwise someone could theoretically perform this action an infinite number of times until they have the exact three cards they want (as long as they haven't entered the race yet)

Yep, with our original house rule, that was what we did for that exact reason. It does work either way however, because eventually there won't be any more turns left (as the other players have finished their turns). So there is a limit to how many times a player can do this. We've tried both ways.

Oh, maybe I missed something in the rules? I thought that until every single player had passed or entered the race the round continued - in which case you could do this as many times as you like since you yourself still haven't passed or entered the race, then enter the race as your final action afterwards to end the phase and start the race. I do like the idea of this as a once per round action though, it lets you specialise in one statistic as long as you're willing to pay the considerable cost of using an action to cycle your hand every now and then. I'll definitely give it a try next time we play

Yes, that's right. By "other players will have finished their turns", I mean that they have either passed or qualified, which would leave you, as you say, with one last turn.

We found it not a good idea to switch the location cards in your hand more than once per round anyway as, while you are doing this, the other people are grabbing the upgrades, setting up the locations for the race and taking the Car Show spots.

I finally got around to checking the rulebook to make sure I hadn't missed something. What I mean to say is, this action would need to be only usable once per round (for each player) since otherwise there's no way of forcing the round to end.

Example: In a six player game, five of the six players have passed or qualified for the race.

As for me though, I still haven't passed or qualified yet so the round doesn't end. Instead, I've got a car which is focused heavily on steering so I'm going to take the Scouting action over, and over, and over again - hundreds of times if necessary, until I draw a three card hand where every card has a steering icon on it.

There's nothing the other players can do to stop me or make the round end while I'm doing this, since the round doesn't end until I myself have passed or qualified for the race.

Hopefully I've done a better job explaining what I mean, re-reading my previous posts I could have been clearer on what I meant...

Definitely, that makes perfect sense. Once per round would avoid all those kinds of issues!

We encountered a similar issue on the weekend with the Superstore variant. Once everyone else had passed or qualified, there was nothing really stopping the final player from refreshing the market indefinitely until he found something he could afford or wanted. A once-per-turn ruling will definitely need to be implemented next time we play.

An issue that arose using Scouting was whether or not you were able to play a card after discarding your hand and drawing three new track cards, or if taking the Scouting action was your whole turn. It was only an issue because the variant for refreshing the shop does include buying something. But we determined that Scouting is a new action, and is unrelated to the action of setting up the track, while the Superstore variant does augment the action of visiting the shop. Seems we were correct.

I think I missed that one, is there another thread explaining the Superstore variant anywhere?

It's one of the variants in the rulebook.
