There has been some comment on runaway leaders being able to maintain advantage by bidding high and recouping resources by choosing the optimal path, a sort of rinse and repeat.

To reduce the information slightly but maintaining the integrity of the bid process maybe the second card on each path is hidden (face down) and is only revealed once the bidding is complete and player paths chosen. Coupled with hidden resources this might mitigate against games which have an initial runaway leader and maintain a level of 'nothing is totally guaranteed', thereby keeping the tension level up.

We've done something similar, but instead have a completely hidden "mysterious" path for those in the mood for taking risks coupled with the ability for one player to "scout" this path in secret (similar to the end of round "skirmish" card in Arctic Scavengers).

I like the sound of a secret path and the use of scouting. Not having played Arctic Scavengers how does this work?

Yes this scout rule and secret path sounds interesting. Could you please explain how you play with these rules?
