Firstly - I love this game. Can't play it enough. It's great.

Anyway...

If a player at influence 11 wins host but doesn't put himself forward to fight - can he lose influence at all during that phase?

The combat is fun - so we play it out when this happens anyway, but it seems as though as soon as the host bid is won - the game is effectively over.

Some cheeky reaction cards that 'embarrass the host' or something causing a lose of influence would be nice.

Or someone else may tie the host at 12 during the arena phase...

By the rules, victory isn't checked until the end of a phase.

I'd generally be in favor of playing it out unless no one else is close. There are ways for another, close player to get one or even two influence in an arena phase by (1) winning the contest and (2) crowning a champion. If more than one player has 12 influence at the end of a phase, there's a final combat. It's less likely for the host in this situation to fail to retain 12 influence. The host can be compelled to participate if one other dominus accepts an invitation and none of the other non-hosting domini does, and if the host puts a champion in the arena and that champion is decapitated, the host would lose 1 influence. There are also one or two intrigue cards playable during the arena phase, though I don't have them in front of me and am at a loss to recall whether they might apply here.

If they are at 11, then do whatever you can to prevent them getting host.

Thanks all!

A good way would be to have other dominus' refuse to go in and for the host to be forced to fight. Then there's cards that can be used to force the host to play a particular character or none at all and lose influence. Other cards could then be stacked upon the top of that to force a further loss of influence...

The purple cards of the Shadow of Death allow a player to call a Festivals in the arena phase BEFORE invitations are done (it's a reaction card).

In that case the host may actually be forced by others to fight (because if he refuses, he loses the 12th influence point).

Some of the Festivals demand the host to call a Primus, other leave the option open. So the card you need is the "Host MUST call a Primus".

As usual, when a player is around 10 influence it's important to prevent him from becoming the host. The festival is really the last hope.
