Hi all,

I am on a hunt for the old version of Carcassonne and would like to know if there is a sure way to identify the various editions by looking at just the box. I can recognize the newest edition more or less, but I am not sure about other boxes. For instance, I have found several Hans Im Gluck boxes on eBay and Amazon, but I am not sure which art style they have.

Thanks in advance!

There are only 2 art styles.

The New Edition and everything before that. The one with the knight on a horse standing next to a woman holding a basket is the old art.

The new art one has a woman pointing at something on a castle while sorta looking at you.

Thank you. Anything else? For example, how can I determine if an expansion is for the old or the new version? Is there a sure way?

Yes, there are only 4 expansions released in the new art style, which is VERY different from the old artwork, so it would be easy to recognize.

These are the new art boxes.

One additional remark, though: of the first 4 expansions there are old editions in existence without watermarks. (These are little grey icons to distinguish to which expansion a tile belongs and therefore making it easier to separate them.)

Watermarks were introduced with Big Box 1, so all print runs before 2006 (and possibly some in 2006) do not have them. Keep this in mind, when buying a second hand copy, if you want to have old artwork with watermarks.

Also I would assume (but am not sure), all print runs with water marks should have the symbol in the top right corner of the box art, like the pig in this Bulgarian version of "Traders & Builder":
