I sat down this morning with my coffee, and I see the imperialist pig has been communicating with spies. My honor requires me to not read it until after the game. I'm opening this forum to post my glorious decision making. But **I plan to not read responses to this forum until after the game**
In all seriousness I can't wait to read all of the posts "noooooo, don't do THAT" later.
EDIT: I'm referring to this other thread https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1635730/critique-my-poor-de...

A spy caught in action on foreign territory!
Should we call him Ryan Gary Powers?
I finally have time to write something.
Turn 1 cards (and order I ended up playing them):
Hold: Truman, Defectors
General thoughts: My opponent may have though I had a clever headline, but to me it was the only headline I thought made sense. I was torn on gutting Italy and West Germany vs. Italy and UK. Former was +1 VP (since I know he headlined Europe Scoring at that point), but the latter made Special Relationship a free play. I took the latter. I'm sure I'll lose by one. USSR 1.
Iran was US 3, so I decided not to coup and instead took over Italy and put one into Afghanistan with NATO. He successfully couped back Italy, but burned his 5YP. I used special relationship to take Syria and Afghanistan. At that point I had a nice score if we didn't do anything in Asia. And if he did was I was going to coup him. He failed to coup Afghanistan. And I score Asia for 5, USSR6.
He moves into Jordan and Egypt with 1 each. I use Nasser as an event to take Egypt. He takes Jordan and moved into Malaysia. I used De Gaulle to coupe Malaysia. He uses Korean War (I lose the roll) to take South Korea. I finally give into using the China card to take Pakistan, Thailand and Indonesia (nothing over controlled though). He wraps up with Nazi Scientist to get 2 making it USSR 4.
I was pretty happy with Turn 1. I had a solid Asian foothold, good Middle East, and average Europe.
Middle East Scoring
I get RS/P against me. I headline Middle East Scoring (no score). Even without RS/P I had my doubts about improving my position in the ME without being obvious and now I'm glad to lock it down as a wash.
My problem this turn was getting distracted by hand management and losing all of Asia. I had all kinds of clever ideas about making sure I did CIA before Fidel, and doing Truman after controlling Yugoslavia. Thus Warsaw into Lebanon and Yugo. But then boom he coups Pakistan (making it 3/0). I do my "clever" Truman play (putting 1 into Yugo, and losing 1 in Finland). But then boom he hits Thailand (making it 4/0). So while I chased a "shiny object" for two plays he now has me completely cut off from a huge swath of Asia.
So, I give up on Asia (until I get a helpful event, fingers crossed) and start to try and shore up ME. I try ME and coup Iran with Marshall Plan (RS/P is the worst) and it goes 0/1. I figure Europe is always hard for USSR anyways. He uses China card to spread through Asia. I use CIA created to go 0/1 into Libya. He uses Comecon to take Algeria (doh) and Panama. I use Fidel as an event. He adds 1 to Israel. I use IP War to take Libya. He takes Israel.
I've went from first to worst in Asia. ME and Europe are ok. And I have presence in the new world (with the CIA created threat gone).

East European Unrest
I'm not trying to hold defectors forever, it just happens to be working out that way.
I feel better about this Turn overall, but any game where USSR can de-stal isn't a terrible game. At this point my general goals are to own Africa and South America, do ok in ME and Europe and hope to not get any worse in Asia.
My headline is my second big mistake (that *I* know about, you all might be picking up on other stupid plays I'll read about later!). I made the beginner mistake of not reading AI War and seeing that Israel counted in the -1's. So it went from a long shot (5/6 I thought) to basically impossible (6 only). I rolled a 5 and was honestly confused at my loss. Oh well, still learning! He has Containment so for two turns in a row I feel ops poor.
I coup Algeria (Africa will be mine!) with East Europe Unrest and it's 0/1. He does 5YP and takes Saudi Arabia and makes Iraq 1/1. I have a hunch he has ME scoring but decide now to only play as much there as I can while focusing on Africa and South America. I de-stal and go into Venezuela, Argentina, Angola and Nigeria. He takes Iraq and adds one to South Africa. Now I'm mostly sure he has ME scoring. I Suez as an event to hit Israel, France and UK (France to make it harder to get back to Algeria for realignments, Israel a nice side effect given my ME suspicion). He takes back Israel and now I *know* he has ME. Maybe I should fight but I don't. I instead use Independent Reds to control Algeria and Zaire. He does ME scoring for 4 making it an even game.
I use Olympic Games to take Botswana. He uses Blockade to take South Africa (a bummer, but I figure USSR has a lot of South Africa breaking cards) and UK. I use NORAD (he doesn't have Canada... yet) to control Venezuela and Argentina and play into Brazil. Again, I'm all about Africa and South America. He spaces Decol.

Turn 4 (in progress, Ryan don't read!)
Latin America Death Squads
I headlined Africa scoring for 6 making it -7 (I think my last update was even, but Ryan didn't get mil ops or something like that). He Brushed War my precious Argentina and won.
I hated to use it, but I wanted a (near) guarantee on my coup so I used the China card against Argentina and make it 0/4 (ha ha!). I figured now at defcon 2 my South America was safe (another reason I used China). But then he just *had* to have and use ABM Treaty and hit Venezuela. Luckily he only made it 1/0. I hope I have the order of US/USSR right...
I wanted to take Venezuela with ops, my choices being Ask Not and Salt. I *really* wanted to use the Salt event, but I didn't want him to discard (yet, it's going to be a late play for me), so I used Salt to make Venezuela 1/3. He uses U2 to take Mexico and Colombia. I say "not in my backyard" and use Junta to over control Brazil and coup Colombia back (0/4).
And here we are. Central America is currently a wash, but I think he has better position controlling Mexico and Panama. I have South America locked down for 8. Europe is a wash, but I'm hoping to sneak into France soon (shhhh). Africa is mostly me (I'm still eyeing South Africa) and sits as 6 points. ME is a disappointment, but given USSR's mid/late game cards in that region I'm ok with it, and it's at him 4. But then there is Asia. He's at 7 and another 1 in SE Asia.
I'm still tentatively optimistic. I'm honestly hoping for control of South America and/or Africa. It seems within reach. I'll be ok with keeping Central America and ME low scoring. My big worry is I don't have great plans for Asia. Decol is out till Turn 7 and he has some great events (Ussuri River Skirmish comes to mind, another reason I hated to use the China card...).

I'll hope Ryan is giving a better/more accurate blow-by-blow in his thread and I'll just list my hands and general thoughts here.
I controlled France and put Spain 1/1 with Latin America Death Squads then Defectors (while he spread through Central America). He realigned me out of Cuba (and all of Central America), but I used Liberation Theology to reestablish presence (I would have otherwise fought *slightly* more if I didn't have that card). He scored Central America for 4 making it -3. Then we both spaced cards (me Puppet Govts and he Muslim Revolution). I held Ask Not and IP War.
Not played yet
Nuclear Test Ban
Lots of 4 op cards! Should be interesting. Gave up one to RS/P him as my headline. I couped using WWBY to get back into the ME (Iran, now 0/3). He tried to break Indonesia, but I used IP War to go 1/2 again (and put Chile 0/1). He scored South East Asia for 2 (and had an earlier 2 for Nixon), so the score is now +2. I used Allende to control Chile 0/3 and get South American control. He broke my France, but I took it back with Sadat (losing Egypt). I used Sadat to stall as I have two cards that might allow him to discard my good scoring cards and I'm not sure where this turn is going yet. I have my 4 ops card in reserve to fix up certain attacks he might make. I can space one of Ask Not, Our Man, and Nuclear Subs. As it stands now I'll play Nuclear Subs. I'm torn on which discard card to allow him. My fuzzy logic is the better odds are for Our Man (there are 28 in the draw pile still). I'm sure whichever I pick will be wrong :-)
