I do not run and hide... I strategically maneuver.
I had just finished making my own classic-themed copy of Traumfabrik, when the kids (Ryan 10, Jared 6) suggested we try I game. I accepted.
I decided to make a set with over 60 silver screen actors and actresses, so our first step was choosing which 19 actors/actresses (plus 7 guest stars) to play with. The boys, big Star Wars fans, insisted that we use Christopher Lee and Alec Guinness -- both much younger than in their Star Wars days. I used Nico Solitander's suggestions (posted on BGG in the files section) for the director names.
The Bridge on the River Kwai
(2 star, Dir. Michael Curtiz 4, Actress Katherine Hepburn 3, Camera 1, Music 2, Guest Star Anthony Quinn 1, Best Adventure 10, Total 23) -- Katherine Hepburn faces a challenge as a British WW2 Colonel.
Some Like It Hot
(4 star, Dir. William Wyler 1, Actor James Dean 1, EFX: 1, Camera 3, Music 2, Guest Star Lucille Ball 1, Total 14) -- The immortal screen pairing of James Dean and Lucille Ball!
(3 star, Dir. Henri-Georges Clauzot 2, Actress Sophia Loren 0, EFX 3, Music 1, First Drama 5, Total 14) -- I'd rather see Grace Kelly in this one.
(3 star, Director Agent 3, Actor Cary Grant 2, Actor William Holden 2, Camera 1, Music 0, Guest Star Alec Guinness 3, Best Drama 10, Total 24) -- One has to wonder which of Grant, Holden, and Guinness played the Ingrid Bergman part...
Total 75 + 1 chip left = 76 points
Singin' in the Rain
(4 star, Dir. Jean-Luc Godard 3, Actor Errol Flynn 1, EFX 2, Camera 3, Music 1, Both 14s gone -1, Total 13) -- Strange combination here.
The Big Sleep (early candidate for Worst Picture, but even lost that)
(2 star, Dir. Agent 1, EFX 1, Camera 2, Music 2, Guest Star Debbie Reynolds -1, First Adventure 5, Total: 12) -- Poor Debbie Reynolds deserves better.
North by Northwest
(3 star, Dir. George Cukor 4, Actress Kim Novak 1, Actor Jimmy Stewart 2, EFX 2, Guest Star Peter O'Toole 3, Total 15) -- A bit more Vertigo-like than North by Northwest.
(3 star, Dir. Alfred Hitchcock 4, Actress Audrey Hepburn 2, Actor Humphrey Bogart 2, Total: 11) -- Bogart plays Charles Foster Kane, P.I.
Total 51 + 10 (best direction + 16 chips = 77 points
Miracle on 34th Street (Edges out The Big Sleep for worst)
(4 star, Dir. Ed Wood Jr. 0, Actor Christopher Lee 0, Camera 0, Music 3, -1 since 7 already taken, Worst Film 10, Total: 16)
Note: This movie was horrible. Apparently Ed Wood re-themed "Miracle" to be about a blood-sucking Santa that scares little kids...
(3 stars, Dir. Jean-Pierre Melville 2, Actress Ingrid Bergman 3, Actress Lauren Bacall 2, Music 0, Total: 10) -- so, what parts in Stalag 17 are Bergman and Bacall playing, anyway?
Arsenic and Old Lace
(4 stars, Dir. John Ford, Actor Frank Sinatra, EFX 2, Camera Agent 3, Music 3, Guest Star Ava Gardner 2, Second Q Best 5, Third Q Best 5, First Entertainment 5, Best Entertainment 10, Total: 44) -- Somehow, I don't see Sinatra being able to pull this off.
(2 stars, Dir. Carol Reed, Actress Deborah Kerr, EFX 3, Camera 2, Total: 9) -- Marshal Deborah Kerr goes after the bandits! (Or, maybe Kerr was actually playing the Grace Kelly part...)
Total 79 + 18 chips = 97 points.
Jared 97, Dad 77, Ryan 76
It was fun to try this -- the boys really enjoyed it, and asked for a Star Wars theme edition, but also with a Tim Allen actor card. Maybe I'll throw in Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell and just make Galaxy Quest.
It was fun to play a game that our 6 year old can win! The boys got some appreciation for classic cinema, but decided in the end that the black-and-white actor/director pictures were "pretty boring."
