No live organism can continue for long to live in conditions of absolute reality. Wargaming House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Wargaming House, and whatever played there, played alone.

Re: Wargaming House Plays Alone ...
... an old, very cranky, bearded Tactical Game Designer was its keeper, from what seemed like an eternity he kept the mildew away, the counters cut and sorted, the games neatly stacked by topic and size. Yet, not even him dared to go downstairs and unlock the tripled-barred and locked oak door, wisely heeding the omnious warning, painted on it in never-drying Dunkelgrau : "BEHOLD! THERE BE MONSTERS (games)!"

Small amount of GG for the first person who can correctly identify the source that inspired the OP.

Two correct answers are possible.

Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House

Boom!

Edit: No GG please. Give it to an unsuspecting new user instead.

The other source would be the intro to the movie The Haunting (best haunted house movie ever. No GG necessary for me either).

I hope you are referring to the 1963 version.

Julie Harris and Claire Bloom? Yes, please!

This brings to mind the idea I've had for the longest time of a retirement community for wargamers: The Old Wargamers Home. Located Preferably by the sea with wide lawns and golf carts.

Only if there are plenty of "get off my lawn" signs around whistle

There used to be a Wargamer Holiday resort on Crete - sun & sea for the wife & kids, historical miniature gaming for the wargamer.

Absolutely! The remake literally put me to sleep during a afternoon matinee.
