My database searching skills may be deficient and I couldn't find an easy way to answer this question.

What is the first published boardgame expansion?

Anyone out there know?

Nope but this question got me thinking; what was anyone's first board game expansion that they bought?

Mine was Elder Sign: Unseen Forces

The first I could think of was Expansions to Civilization.

Civilization Expansion Trade Cards Set was published in 1982, but there has to be something earlier.

Cosmic Encounter: Expansion Set #1 first comes to mind (in part because CE was designed with expansions in mind), but I'm sure the concept can be traced back to some of the earliest wargames.

The oldest one I know of is Monopoly Stock Exchange Add-on (1936).

I'm surprised no one in that thread mentioned the Mad Queen expansion for chess.

Variant vs expansion. Expansions are published.
