I just heard that this expansion could be used as a 2 player game (team of character vs team of character) is it true?

That could potentially make my hero quest game playable again for me. It's also an interesting twist to dungeon crawling in general. The only similar game I have seen in theme is Dungeon Twister.

Are the rules available somewhere? Else making our own rules should not be that hard. I have a small list of miniatures (+ hero scape) I could use as additional characters.

Every copy of the game ( and expansions) could be played as a two player game. There is no reason why one person could not play all 4 heroes. It's not that much to keep track of. haha.

It's a standard 1vMany model. The many has to be at least 1 person but can be up to 4.

That being said this expansion is fun.

Well in the original hero quest, the game master is more like a referee than a player that wants to win.

From what I understood, the expansion seemed like each player now had objectives to win.

Which made me wonder if heroscape system could not be used with the heroquest land scape where each player has a team of characters facing each other in the dungeon.

An option could be that one player could have access to the map layout and could make some rooms appear on the board to spawn the content of the room on the board and have mini to play with.

It sounds like you want a game like Descent: Journeys in the Dark (specifically first edition.. I hate second) or Star Wars: Imperial Assault,
