Nice, sounds like a good stepping stone between Ancients and Napoleonics (SWMBO still struggles with the latter)

Pre-ordered. I'd consider the time period to be Dark Age rather than Medieval.

They should have started the first base game to take place in the Hundred years war between France and England.
I was hoping that another company, with a preference with miniatures, would take on this C&C Medieval period project on Kickstarter, maybe I can use the original Battlelore Minis for this GMT C&C Medieval game.

Maybe it's an attempt to bring C&C Ancients past the fall of Rome.

As was I.

As much as I love the C&C series, it needs miniatures for the best experience.

Alright! It's almost like an expansion for Ancients. It seems to pick up right where Ancients would leave off!

Only one 60-card Command Deck, but a deeper (called "oversize") 13wx11d board.

Agreed. I'm glad they went with blocks. I still haven't shelled out for the WWI game as I don't want minis. Of course, my son feels the opposite so there's proof there's a market for both right under one roof.

I have loads of miniature games and they're great - but I prefer blocks on the C&C style maps because it's easier to see which hex they're in and quicker to move them. Looking forward to this one!!! (And eventually Vikings)

It is about the Byzantine and Sassanid period.

A no brainer for me : I preordered two of them.

Description on GMT site wrote:
Commands & Colors: Medieval is based on the highly successful Commands & Colors game system and by design is not overly complex. The Medieval game introduces many new game concepts to the Commands & Colors system, which add historical depth and flavor. Some of the new concepts are:

Superior armor and status when battling
Cavalry units increase to 4 blocks
Heavy infantry battle dice are reduced from 5 dice down to 4
Light Bow Cavalry units can employ the Parthian Shot when they evade

Still, some Commands & Colors game mechanics remain familiar to players of other games in the system, like the deck of Medieval Command cards that drive movement while creating a “fog of war,” and the battle dice that will resolve combat quickly and efficiently. The stylized battlefield scenario maps emphasize the important terrain features and highlight the historical deployment of forces in scale with the game system. The scale of the game is flexible, and varies from battle to battle. For some scenarios, a unit may represent a Chiliarchy of soldiers, while in other scenarios a unit may represent just a few brave warriors. The battlefield tactics, however, that you will need to execute to gain victory conform remarkably well to the strengths and limitations of the various medieval unit types, their weapons, the terrain, and history.

The medieval battles showcased in the scenario book focus on the historical confrontations between the Byzantine Empire and Sassanid Persians (530 to 627 AD) with a slight detour to battle the Moors and their rebel allies (645 - 648 AD). The Byzantine Empire during this period of medieval history was one of constant transition and reorganization. Its army tended to mirror its eastern adversaries by deploying an increasing number of armored cavalry formations (Cataphracts) and more missile troops. Yet, it was how the Byzantines adapted their battlefield tactics in relation to the enemy it faced that is perhaps the chief reason for the longevity of their Empire.

Tentative Scenarios

Dara - 530 AD - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Callinicum - 531 AD Stage 1 - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Callinicum - 531 AD Stage 2 - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Thacin - 545 AD - Moors & Rebels vs Byzantine
Marta - 547 AD - Moors & Rebels vs Byzantine
Fields of Cato - 548 AD - Moors & Rebels vs Byzantine
River Hippis - 549 AD - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Melitene - 576 AD - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Solachon - 586 AD - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Cappadocia - 622 AD - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine
Nineveh - 627 AD - Sassanid Persians vs Byzantine

That was my thought too. Many people will scratch their heads at this being labelled medieval however correct it might be in terms of historical periods.

I'm very much interested in this game and I'm happy with blocks. Judging from the selection of the scenarios, I suspect we are going to have specific "armies" for the different relevant empires/kingdoms of the period. I would have preferred a generic box with "blue" and "red" armies with standard units, infantry, cavalry and range, supplemented by scenario specific or period specific rules. The game would have been still hugely expandable trough campaigns and extra units (special cavalry, early firearms, etc.) but the generic design IMHO would have fostered the contributions from the community. Anyway, I'm looking forward to play it.

Whew. I've been considering selling off either Ancients or Napoleonics because while they are different they are still too similar for my smaller collection. When I saw Medieval I thought it might replace both but I'm not as interested in the armies in this starting point so I can delay that decision.

They had set the upper limit to CCA at the Byzantines, so I find this a natural follow up of the series. I wouldn't like them to miss the Byzantines! Moreover, starting with something too similar or overlapping with BL, like the 100 year war, would have been confusing at least.

It's true that the name does not seem to fit well with the period, but if they mean to cover with the "Ancients" label the 10 centuries from 500BC-500AD and with the "Medieval" one those from 500-1500AD, that's fine. I'd better have two games for 500AD-1500AD than five!

Naming it medieval should mean that they will start with Byzantines, and then move on towards the better known mid- and late medieval periods, through the Vikings?
