I am still not clear on obstacle placement.

The wording seems slightly different than for smoke.

To me, smoke must be in the next space for a confederate unit.

For the obstacle, it seems like it could be any space in front of a unit.

Can someone confirm?

I have always placed them directly in front of a unit, that seems to be the intent of the rules.

Hey Nick!
In both cases, the marker is placed in the space in front of the unit in question. It's effects are then implemented until it is removed per the rules. The Obstacle mrker is placed in that next space because it turns that space into an Obstacle for movement purposes; the Cover markers are placed there so as to relieve any excessive marker-piling in the unit's space and keep the effects legible (if I remember correctly).

Thanks!
Hermann
