We really enjoy this game and have had some very good 3-5 player games but we are starting to play a lot of 2-player and we are wondering what do you TM veterans think is the best, most fair way to play 2-player?

We have the Fire & Ice expansion and have been using the Auction/Bidding system with a slight twist. We draw 4 Faction tokens from the bag and randomly put 2 of them together, so you are really bidding on your choice of 4 factions. We have been playing that if you win the bidding you can choose either side of the two faction tokens that you won in the bidding. The person who loses the bidding obviously gets to pick one of the other 4 for free.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to make it more fair? Any other ideas on how to make the 2-player game better? Do you guys like the Fire & Ice map better for 2-player or the original?

Find a third player?

We usually randomly each pick two colors then let my wife try to pick the best matchup for her.

There are several threads about 2p improvements in the Terra Mystica forum for Variants, and almost all of them apply regardless of whether you use the F&I expansion or not.

Your bidding system sounds interesting: does the loser of the auction pick their faction upon knowing what the winner has picked? Or is this done simultaneously?

The winner of the bidding announces which faction they are playing and then the loser announces theirs. We have never changed our factions after one of us has announced. Neither of us have played all of the factions yet so its not like we are super strong with a certain faction. The funny thing is that we both really like playing Halflings so when that comes out then our bidding gets seriousshake

Ok, thanks. I feel that knowing which faction the winner has picked gives an advantage to the loser when picking his/her faction. E.g. if the winner picked some "cultish" faction (Auren, CMs, ...), then the loser can pick a "spreading" faction (or, if they have a stronger cultish faction, pick that). If the winner picks Mermaids the loser might be better off with a different faction than if the winner picked Swarmlings, etc. Also it's the loser who (potentially) decides whether there's competition on the color wheel or not (e.g. winner picks blue, now loser -assuming the two colors are this way- can pick either black = competition or yellow = not-so-much competition for hexes).

Short answer:

Put neutral color markers on the 3 and 5 spaces of all cult tracks so that a 2p cult scores aren't always 8-4 or 8-0;

Put out only one of each town tile;

Put out only one of each favor tile.
