Can you please confirm whether the below is correct please?

Roman declares battle.
Defender is a gallic leader plus a bunch of visible (non-hidden) warbands and gallic allies; there are no region adjacent controlled by the defender faction (nor friendlies).
The defender opt to retreat.
Losses are halved.
Allies die first.
The surviving warbands die because they cannot retreat.
The leader survives by staying in the same region (assuming the final loss number was not enough to kill him too).

Thanks in advance again

Taking a risk - don't have the rules or aids - but that sounds right to me.

Yes, that is correct.

EDIT: Also, there are no permanent "friendlies". Any faction may allow you to retreat to an area controlled by them, potentially in exchange for resources or promises of future actions.
Of course German and neutral territories are always off limits.

Yep 2nd that. I agree.
Had the warbands started as hidden then they would have lived to fight another day.
