Play Advanced Intercom System.

It essentially doubles one Coordinate card per turn. That's... hugely effective. Particularly if you're going with a heavy Coordinate strategy in the first place. Which you should be.

Cards like Pain is Scary and Ain't Got Time For This become +4 combat. Monty becomes +4 Recruit. Putting cards like Vera well within your reach. Or use it to get A Moneyed Individual and really watch your Credits skyrocket.

It's a major game-changer.

You may not be able to get it until the end of your second mission: it costs 5 Credits. But if it comes out, always buy it. Don't worry about healing Crew or Ship Strikes: doubling a Monty will give you enough to repair most Ship Strikes, and your increased kill ratio will keep you from taking more Crew Strikes.

Alternately, take a handicap by starting with it or putting it into play after Episodes A or B.

Yes, it's useless if you're playing without the four Characters who have Coordinate (Mal, Jayne, Simon, River). But you probably shouldn't do that no matter what. Always include one or two of those as Supporting Characters if you can. Unless you really like a challenging game.

My campaign game managed to get that upgrade, plus the one that allows you to draw 7 cards. made things significantly easier.

Just remember that credits don't carry over (at least not when playing with the Rules As Written), so you'd have to score 5 credits in one episode.

Yep, that's probably not going to happen until the second InterMission. But it's really the difference between winning and losing.

It's not impossible to beat Crow or Jubal without the Advanced Intercom System. But it's a lot harder.

What Side Jobs you get can also make a difference. Two of the 1-credit-each jobs can push you over the top even on A episodes. Yeah, you're only going to get 3 Credits if you pull off Serenity (1). But if you complete that, and Unification Day Brawl or Pockpocket... or Geisha Dolls, or Pool Hall R&R, or Take on Passengers, or Deliver a Baby, you've got it at the first InterMission. And none of those are that hard. (Juggle Geese is, which is why I left it off the list.)

And if you give up 2 Credits to Deliver Medical Supplies, then yeah, it's not going to happen no matter what.

Alternately, you could House Rule/handicap yourself by taking it at the beginning, and forfeit the first 5 Credits that you get from episode objectives and side jobs.
