Haha how many of these reviewers were under a NDA. They released all there reviews at exactly the same time.

Review embargoes are super common in the video game industry - not sure how commonplace it is in board games, but it seems like that's what Riot did here.

Tom Vasel mentioned this morning on Board Game Breakfast that he had a review that would be posting today at 2PM and he absolutely could not talk about it until then. There certainly were a lot of reviewers under that NDA because right around 2 my YouTube subscriptions started blowing up all with this one game.

This is the proper way to build hype. Not a glossy trailer that provides nothing to base your buying decision around.

No board game company could replicate the cost of this game. Not possible. I doubt Riot is actually profiting off this initial print.

It's not common in the board game industry but I've seen it on at least one game in the past from a major publisher.

No NDA was signed. They just showed respect, where friendly and asked nicely.

Not in distribution, but they're selling direct.

The standard distributor discount on RRP is 60-70%

So when FFG make a $100 game, they're seeing $30-40 per copy. The rest is profit for the distributor and profit for the retail store.

Whereas when they sell this direct for $75, they're seeing probably $70 of that. As much as FFG make on two copies of Imperial Assault.

(And yes, that means all those great Kickstarter deals you see are not so great)

This is textbook marketing. The promotion team knew who to seed with this game. They knew that they would have to go above and beyond with as much of the design as they could so that they could stand out. The packaging and price point were certainly one way to stand out. The art was certainly another. The fact that it seems to be a good game is just gravy at this point!

Fun to see this whirlwind!
