You're not alone. I have also seen this behavior in Chrome and I suspect it's one of my extensions. But I haven't taken the time to figure out which one, so I just started using a different browser for BGG.

Chrome wasn't doing it here but was for a few other pages after a recent Chrome update. Thankfully an update to that came out a few days later and all is well again. Could just be a coincidence however...
Hey, a followup from me: I went back to Chrome and took the time to check out all my extensions.. and I found one that definitely seems to show a difference when disabled: It's called "Emoji Input by EmojiStuff.com", and is just supposed to show properly-formatted Emoji when Chrome doesn't fall back to the right character set. I can live without this one, especially while browsing boardgamegeek, and no more freezing.
