This was literally my reaction to that last line.

.. just a video game...

according to CNBC on 2015..

.."Riot Games' "League of Legends" was the top dog among free-to-play games. The multiplayer online battle arena game earned $1.6 billion in revenues — seven times more than its closest competitor in the genre."

Yes it is just a video game.

Part of the big deal of LoL, similar to its sibling Dota2 (developed by Valve), is that the games are very popular for both playing and watching. Both have been turned into huge e-sports games with many teams of professional players and major tournaments for tons of money (multi-million dollar prize pools).

Additionally LoL and Dota2 are both free to play which draws a lot of players.

Now you may be saying what is the difference between LoL and Dota2. Basically they both spawned from the same Warcraft 3 mod Dota so at a high level they are very similar. Dota2 has stuck to the classic game and polished it whereas LoL broke off and added a lot of new characters and modes. Also LoL established itself a bit earlier so I think it still remains a little more popular (at least in America), though Dota2 is huge as well.

League of Legends is what's called a MOBA, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena.

Basically, two teams will face off on a map and attempt to achieve some goal or other, butting heads in the process. There are also creeps -- neutral creatures roaming the map -- players can kill for . . . stuff. XP or bonuses or whatever (it varies from game to game).

They're immensely popular because, as noted above, they're popular both with players and with people who like to watch such things.

League of Legends is the most popular of these games.

Until it was mentioned in the vids of the reviews, I had never heard of it.

It's the most popular video game in the world, with 100 million unique players a month. The game is what's known as a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), a genre started by the Warcraft III community mod DOTA (Dawn of the Ancients). The format has remained virtually unchanged throughout the genre's life.

Ten players form two teams of five heroes with the objective of destroying the opponents "nexus". The map consists of three lanes down which "minions" for both sides walk in an attempt to reach the enemy base. There's a river which divides the two halves and a jungle on either side between the lanes. One player typically takes the role of the "jungler" to "farm" the jungle for XP and gold, and visiting lane to "gank" opposing players from the fog of war.

It's free-to-play with purchasables being custom skins, new heroes and runes you can assign to modify your stats. Everything apart from skins can be purchased through IP which you earn by playing. Skins are purchasable by money only.

It has a highly active eSports scene with prize pools in the millions. The world championship finals are held in arenas which see tens of thousands of fans present, with concurrent online viewership in the tens of millions.

I've never heard of it either, but before my kids were born I used to play WoW all the time so it sounds like its similar to the pvp from that.

Not even close. You can't drive 5 minutes down a street before seeing a McDonalds in most of the developed world. You can very easily not play any video games and thus not know what any of them are. I only know about LOL, because I made an account 5 or 6 years ago when I was playing WoW and a few friends played it. Game looked terrible back then and completely uninteresting so I uninstalled it and moved on. I had no clue they were such a success because I don't pay attention to video games at all anymore.

It is VERY similar to Alterac Valley (the large snowy one), only not quite as large a map, and with more NPCs/mobs/whatever people call them these days, and at most 5v5 instead of 40v40.

And before someone jumps on my case, yes I am aware DotA came before WoW. Also, ToB was better than DotA
