I was watching rahdo run through Tzolk'in and that got me thinking.
What other games have weird or unusual boards?

Notre Dame has a really clever and unusual design for a board. Each player has their own board portion, which fits together to form a full board. The central piece of the board is differently shaped depending on player number. Very clever - have not seen anything comparable.

Key to the Kingdom had that folding board. That wasn't used to terribly interesting effect, but fundamentally it was a kids' roll-and-move.

This seems like it might work better as a geeklist though.

There are all these games which use the box as part of the board: Niagara, Cleopatra and the Society of Architects...
And in the same vein, the recent Ice Cult

Edit - And Mythe has a pop-up board. Not original overall, but definitely so in the world of boardgames.

A little like Notre Dame, La Isla has a board with fan pieces that fit around a central core tile. The sole purpose is to present a different layout every play, so it's not quite so wonderfully done as Notre Dame, but still very successful at what it sets out to achieve.

Interesting - sounds like an idea waiting for a decent implementation. Could be used quite interestingly in a real game.

I like Luna's board(s) - it consists of one main board (temple) that has sections you can flip over depending on the number of players, and seven smaller island boards that surround the main temple board.

The two i can think of at the moment:
The Prodigals Club with the triangle in the middle and squares at the sides.
And Chaos in the Old World with the skin board with built in dials.

Edit:

Oh! and 13 Dead End Drive of course.

Carpe Astra as a board made up of pieces that you can add and rotate. The board changes configuration several times during the game.

FWIW there are board sections for Martian Chess, each with 4x4 array of distorted squares, which can be fit together to make boards for 2 to 6 players.

The Godfather Game came in a box shaped like a violin case. The board folded out into the same shape.

There may be a whole class of games that use the fan to obtain variability. Just off hand, Tobago and La Strada.

But if that kind of variability qualifies as "unusual", what about the hex layouts of Catan and Tikal ?

Samurai is non-rectangular, but not particularly variable except based on number of players.

While Amerigo has a square board, it's made up of other smaller square boards placed randomly, so that the game board is never the same.
