Take the Board Game Motivation Profile to see how you compare with other board game players!

This new version of the profile tool has been revised/updated with data from over 40,000 board gamers.

• 3 New Motivations: Cooperation, Chance, and Need to Win.
• Expanded Game Examples: We're now using the large data set to identify the best game examples for each motivation.
• Improved Norms: The underlying math is now based on a much larger sample of 40,000 board gamers.
• Improved Inventory: A number of survey items have been replaced with more robust items.
• Double-Layered Graphs: We're experimenting with a new graph style to present more information visually.
• Wording Changes: Based on community feedback, we've renamed the "Fantasy" motivation to "Immersion".

Thanks so much BGG for helping us create this profile tool in the initial brainstorming, pilot survey, and initial launch.

You can learn more about how we created this profile tool in our blog post.

If you've previously taken the profile and registered an account, you can sign in to view your updated profile. You don't need to go through the survey again.

Our next development goal is to create a recommender engine based on the data.

OK took the quiz.

How about adding a link so you can directly post your chart?

Pretty cool. I did this one and the suggested video game one, and got very similar results (calm, independent, and grounded).

Great suggestion. We have something like this for our video game profile. We're hoping to add it soon to the board game profile as well!

I thought mine was correct, as well. I think I pushed on the luck too much, I actually like low-luck/no luck games, but overall, it was pretty spot-on.

Some of the example (and counterexample) games seem fairly unusual given the categories they represent. The most striking are the examples of "Need to Win" games: Stratego, Diplomacy, Monopoly, Risk, or Settlers of Catan. This group to me very strongly suggests not need-to-winners but "People who aren't interested in designer board games," "Regular Joes", "Men on the Clapham omnibus", or whatever you want to call them. I don't think I'd be alone in this assessment.

Quite why it has popped out as "Need to win" is unclear - either there is some genuine link between the need to win and not being a committed board game hobbyist (which would be extremely interesting), or (and I suspect unfortunately rather more likely) this factor is not measuring the thing it appears to be measuring.

Took this before but tried it again...still Immersed and Gregarious (but no longer "Engaged" ).

Edit: next we'll see this data become the match.com of gamers...your graph gets printed on you con badge ... "Um sorry James you can't have that open slot, you're much too gregarious for this table".

Part of what may be happening is that relative to the other motivations, "Need to Win" is more about the person rather than the game. I.e., it's tapping into an actual trait, but this trait is not cleanly expressed in specific game titles, so there aren't really good examples to begin with. So the example games list in this case may be tapping into some secondary pattern in the data--e.g., because "Need to Win" scores are more randomly distributed in modern board games, the more "traditional" board games surface because they attract a slightly (but more consistently) higher score.

So it could be measuring a meaningful trait even if the examples don't totally make sense.
