Hi all.

Im playing my first game.
I think I dont do many mistakes in the rules...

It seems like the game is easy.

Opinions

Are you following the rules for torpedo dud rates? That alone makes it difficult (depending on your starting year) and reflects the real-life frustration they had.

OC I do.

I started from 1941... And then yes, its much harder... But now im in oct 44. Its really easy. Once you hit...

Also, no real differance in torpedo models after 44...

Escorts hardly do real crippeling dmg (at least until now)

Ibwas sure it will be much harder...

Both of which correlate well with their historical counterparts.

I would probably give it a few more games before passing judgment. I also think that the difficulty scales with the number of risks you are willing to take. Each risk such as close range attack, forward + aft firing, daytime attack, Capital Ship attack, etc., makes it more and more difficult to escape escort detection.

Out of 12 games, I retired 4 times, was captured once, and was sunk 7 times.

In 6 of those games, I opted to use the Variable Escort rule. I have not survived a campaign yet when using this rule, often because I was sunk or heavily damaged by a veteran escort. I would consistently roll high on the escort detection cycle and then roll 5 hits by an escort and then the +1 hit from the veteran escort would sink me. To be fair, I was sunk twice after making questionable/high risk attacks on a Capital Ship.

I actually decided to drop the Variable Escort rule for now as this made the game feel almost too hard (or unrealistic) since, historically, about 75% of submarines survived the war if I remember correctly. My experience may be an anomaly.

I just finished my first game. Full war 41-45.

12 patroles, In total 17 ships were sunk including one 33k capital ship (!) And a total of 119k tons sunk...

Im sure I was lucky with few extreamly and very lucky rolls (like torpedo tube fixes, periscope fixes fule tank fixing etc...)

Im also quite sure I made mistakes here and there... Many small rules to remember to referance. There are many of them when and if needed...

But. It was a blast! Super cool nerative! The movie U-571 popped to my head all the time (I know, germans but you get the idea lol)

I took risks here and there but never did a too risky attack. Imo its stupid... As a captain lol

As its a game after all, I will on next game be more daring

Hey Aero,
Yes, I'd say you were running a bit on the unlucky side. You should survive about 80% of your careers with standard rules, probably about 70% or so with the variable escort rules (which CAN actually work in your favor if you get a green escort, but generally, makes it slightly harder.)

I tweaked things after hundreds of beta test runs during game development, so I feel the game DOES reasonably reproduce the correct historical results "on average" Your results may vary

But yes, I'd crush your dice and buy some new ones. LOL.

With 12 careers, at least it seems as if you're enjoying it.

Take care,

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the feedback. I really do enjoy the flavor that the variable escorts bring to the table, so I will give that rule another try.

Yep, I think it's safe to say that I definitely enjoy this game.

Full war is what, 45 months. At 2 months per patrol and one month per refit minimum that's 36 months, so leaves 9 months meaning you only took sufficient damage to add a month to the refit on 9 out of 12 patrols. I'm not sure whether that's typical or a sign of low risk taking. If the latter then I guess you got lucky with targets, as there's a chance of getting sacked for failing missions.

There are a couple things there that make the game harder.
